{"id":338680,"date":"2025-10-28T15:50:17","date_gmt":"2025-10-28T15:50:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/338680\/"},"modified":"2025-10-28T15:50:17","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T15:50:17","slug":"gary-oldman-and-tilda-swinton-return-to-royal-court-for-70th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/338680\/","title":{"rendered":"Gary Oldman And Tilda Swinton Return To Royal Court For 70th Anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/tilda-swinton\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tilda-swinton\" data-tag=\"tilda-swinton\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tilda Swinton<\/a> is returning to the stage for the first time in more than 35 years as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/royal-court-theatre\/\" id=\"auto-tag_royal-court-theatre\" data-tag=\"royal-court-theatre\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Royal Court Theatre<\/a>\u2019s 70th anniversary celebrations, which will see <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/gary-oldman\/\" id=\"auto-tag_gary-oldman\" data-tag=\"gary-oldman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gary Oldman<\/a> back at the theater that helped launch his career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSwinton will reprise her acclaimed 1988 performance in Manfred Karge\u2019s\u00a0Man to Man, which will see her reunite with the play\u2019s original director Stephen Unwin<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and designer Bunny Christie. The production will run in the Royal Court\u2019s Jerwood Theatre Downstairs from September 5 next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/man-to-man\/\" id=\"auto-tag_man-to-man\" data-tag=\"man-to-man\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Man to Man<\/a>\u00a0will also play the Berliner Ensemble before transferring to an off-Broadway theater in Spring 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOldman\u2019s relationship with the Royal Court stretches back four decades when he appeared in a string of plays \u2013 the last one being Caryl Churchill\u2019s Serious Money\u00a039 years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Slow Horses\u00a0star\u2019s return is linked to the Royal Court\u2019s earliest days. The actor will star in and direct\u00a0Krapp\u2019s Last Tape\u00a0for a limited four week run from May 8. The actor performed the Samuel Beckett play earlier at the York Theatre Royal. It was originally performed at the Royal Court in 1958 with Patrick McGee. Oldman\u2019s production will run in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs from May 8, 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe English Stage Company at the\u00a0\u00a0Royal Court was created by George Devine. And Tony Richardson and\u00a0\u00a0their first season was launched in 1956. However, the play that put\u00a0the Royal Court on the map was the third production, John Osborne\u2019s\u00a0Look Back in Anger.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-deadline-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_3538.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"768\" width=\"1024\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRoyal Court artistic director David Byrne. Baz Bamigboye\/Deadline<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe theater, located in London\u2019s Sloane Square district, also presented Mary Ure and Alan Bates in the\u00a01956 UK premiere of Arthur Miller\u2019s\u00a0The Crucible, which is why\u00a0\u00a0it makes perfect sense to transfer Kimberly Belflower\u2019s Tony Award nominated play\u00a0John Proctor is the Villain,\u00a0a contemporary reassessment of Miller\u2019s classic drama. The play directed by Danya Taymor will run at the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs\u00a0from March 20, 2026. The play\u2019s A-list producers include Wagner Johnson Productions,Wessex Gove, Sonia Friedman, Runyonland and John Mara Jr which signals, to me at any rate, that tentative plans are in place for it to transfer into the West End after the Royal Court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe season was introduced by artistic director David Byrne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tLuke Norris\u2019s\u00a0Guess How Much I Love You?\u00a0will\u00a0launch the 70th anniversary from January 16, 2026 in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs. It stars Robert Aramayo, who\u2019s giving a sublime performance in hit film\u00a0I Swear, and Rosie Sheehy, and will be directed by Jeremy Herrin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Royal Court was founded as the home for new work and it\u2019s to their credit that artistic chief Byrne and executive director Will Young still champion new writers.The provokably titled Between The River And The sea by Yousef Sweid and Isabella Sedlak, directed by Sedlak, will play at the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs from April 15.
