Kennedy \u2014 the father of US Secretary of Health and Human Services <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/22\/health\/truth-about-saturated-fats-revealed-as-rfk-jr-changes-diet-guidelines\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/a> \u2014 is on the market for the first time in more than half a century, Gimme Shelter can reveal.<\/p>\n<p>And even the appliances in the kitchen, as well as the oven, remain the same \u2014 though they don\u2019t appear in the listing images.<\/p>\n<p>The 2,000-square-foot three-bedroom, three-bath corner co-op is asking $1.79 million.<\/p>\n<p>Robert F. Tim Waltman<\/p>\n<p>Then-Senator Kennedy bought the 14th-floor residence at 860 United Nations Plaza in 1965, the year the building launched. He was slated to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1965\/06\/18\/archives\/kennedy-buying-east-river-suite-gives-up-glen-cove-house-keeps.html?unlocked_article_code=1.uk8.jGvk.aFY9mkW2MTsE&amp;smid=url-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">move into<\/a> the glass-walled unit in the fall of 1965, according to a report in the New York Times.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The sleek mid-century chic spread, with\u00a048 feet of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the UN garden,\u00a0has been preserved like a fly in amber ever since.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been relatively untouched for more than 50 years, with original marble in the baths and the same oven in the kitchen,\u201d\u00a0listing broker Mary Barbrack, of Compass, told Gimme.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the time that Kennedy purchased the co-op, his wife, Ethel and their nine kids \u2014 they would ultimately have 11 \u2014 resided on their family farm, Hickory Hill, in McLean, Virginia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It had been just two years since Bobby\u2019s brother, President John F. Kennedy, had been assassinated. By 1968, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis. <\/p>\n<p>That evening, at a campaign rally in Indianapolis, RFK \u2014 then the Democratic presidential candidate \u2014 urged his followers to act with love and compassion, not hate and revenge, following the assassination.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we need in the United States is not division; what we need in the United States is not hatred; what we need in the United States is not violence or lawlessness; but love and wisdom, and compassion toward one another, and a feeling of justice toward those who still suffer within our country, whether they be white or they be black.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An eat-in space also gets great natural light. Tim Waltman<\/p>\n<p>Two months later, in June 1968, RFK was also assassinated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1968\/08\/16\/archives\/mrs-robert-kennedy-seeks-to-sell-apartment-in-city.html?unlocked_article_code=1.uk8.DsLe.7M-ftXIhbM53&amp;smid=url-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ethel put<\/a> their New York residence on the market later that summer, estimating that it was then worth\u00a0up to $175,000 \u2014 or $1.66 million today.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the time that Kennedy bought it, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1965\/06\/18\/archives\/kennedy-buying-east-river-suite-gives-up-glen-cove-house-keeps.html?unlocked_article_code=1.uk8.jGvk.aFY9mkW2MTsE&amp;smid=url-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">asking price was $68,000<\/a> plus an annual maintenance fee of around $6,500, according to reports. Back then, the building was filled with\u00a0\u201chigh achievers,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/archive\/6634172\/the-home-people-who-live-in-glass-houses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Joanne Carson told Time magazine.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cPeople who live here are not climbing. They have arrived,\u201d she said, referring to her husband\u00a0Johnny Carson, as well as neighbors Truman Capote, TV producer David Susskind, actor Cliff Robertson and others.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInside 14F is vintage 1960s mid-century modern,\u201d\u00a0Barbrack added. \u201cBuyers\u00a0who care about architecture recognize these towers instantly \u2014 the [Wallace K.] Harrison and [Max] Abramovitz design, that bronze-and-glass curtain wall, and the soaring lobby make a striking impression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>860 United Nations Plaza. Christopher Sadowski<\/p>\n<p>Abramovitz and Harrison were the architects behind the UN complex and Lincoln Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The home opens to a foyer that leads to a corner living area. While the residence is currently configured as a two-bedroom, a bonus room can revert back to a third bedroom, or transform into a home office or a formal dining room. <\/p>\n<p>The kitchen also has a \u201ccozy eat-in nook,\u201d according to the listing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The main bedroom suite overlooks the UN and the East River. It also features three closets, including one that is a walk-in, the listing notes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Building amenities include a concierge, doormen, a gym, a lounge and a rooftop deck with panoramic views.
