{"id":339649,"date":"2025-10-29T01:44:26","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T01:44:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/339649\/"},"modified":"2025-10-29T01:44:26","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T01:44:26","slug":"phoenix-thrift-shop-transforms-into-pantry-to-help-families-losing-snap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/339649\/","title":{"rendered":"Phoenix thrift shop transforms into pantry to help families losing SNAP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/51406FDE997DCE3CB6D9113F8EEF679C.jpg\" alt=\"Thrift shop fights SNAP cuts with free pantry\" class=\"sr-only\" data-v-7a5d4fdb=\"\"\/>    <\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\"><strong>PHOENIX<\/strong> &#8211; The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox10phoenix.com\/news\/arizona-sues-over-suspension-snap-benefits\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>State of Arizona filed a lawsuit Tuesday<\/strong><\/a> challenging the suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, a direct result of the ongoing government shutdown in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox10phoenix.com\/tag\/people\/kris-mayes\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Attorney General Kris Mayes<\/strong><\/a> called the decision &#8220;unlawful&#8221; and announced that Arizona is joining 26 other states in suing the federal government.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;I will not stand by as Arizonan families go hungry,&#8221; Mayes said at a press conference. &#8220;Arizonans should not ever, ever be used as a bargaining chip.&#8221; Calling it one of the most important lawsuits she has ever filed, Mayes added, &#8220;I feel confident the law is on our side.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KSAZ\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Local perspective:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">More than 900,000 Arizonans \u2014 roughly 12% of the state\u2019s population, including low-income families, seniors, and young children \u2014 face a freeze on their SNAP benefits starting Nov. 1.<\/p>\n<p> Businesses Step In as D.C. Fights <\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">As Republicans and Democrats continue a budget standoff in Washington, Valley businesses are taking action to help those affected.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">E.P. Bradley and Kayla Long, owners of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kingpigeonthriftandvintage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>King Pigeon Thrift &amp; Vintage in Phoenix<\/strong><\/a>, are transforming an entire room of their shop into a free pantry. Starting Nov. 1, the doors will open for people to take canned goods, fresh produce, meats, and cheeses, all at no cost.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve had food insecurity growing up. My mom was a single parent, so it&#8217;s something that hits very close to home,&#8221; Long said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">The idea started small but quickly gained momentum on social media. In just 24 hours, thousands of people were reaching out, volunteering, and dropping off donations.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Phoenix resident Presely Nassise, who relies on SNAP benefits, was among those who came to donate. &#8220;My whole grocery budget was just frozen, and I didn&#8217;t know where I was going to make that money up,&#8221; Nassise said, adding, &#8220;I teared up&#8230; because prior to that, I didn&#8217;t know where my groceries were going to come from.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Nassise&#8217;s experience speaks to the urgency felt by many. The Longs maintain that any business can step up. &#8220;We have the ability to do it,&#8221; Long said. &#8220;I would say that anybody that has the ability or space to do it, anybody can do this. We&#8217;re not anything special.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">FOX 10 reached out to the USDA, which has not commented on the lawsuit.
