{"id":340019,"date":"2025-10-29T05:21:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T05:21:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/340019\/"},"modified":"2025-10-29T05:21:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T05:21:10","slug":"jacksonville-hair-stylist-rides-out-hurricane-melissa-while-trapped-in-jamaica-action-news-jax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/340019\/","title":{"rendered":"Jacksonville hair stylist rides out Hurricane Melissa while trapped in Jamaica \u2013 Action News Jax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla.  \u2014 Sharhonda Stewart flew to Jamaica thinking she\u2019d be on vacation, helping to style hair for her friend\u2019s destination wedding. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">She\u2019s now trapped inside her Montego Bay resort, days after she was supposed to have flown home, riding out what she describes as the strongest storm she\u2019s ever seen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not anything like a Jacksonville hurricane,\u201d Stewart said, \u201cyou can\u2019t really see much outside. You really just see gray; the wind and rain are very powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Stewart shared a video on her social media page showing the heavy winds blowing against the palm trees outside her resort. She said she watched the wind rip the palm fronds from the trees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Her flight back to Jacksonville was supposed to leave last Sunday, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/weather\/hurricane\/current-storms\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/weather\/hurricane\/current-storms\/\">Hurricane Melissa<\/a> forced the airport shut down and her flight to be canceled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cWe have no choice but to stay here, to endure it. I would like to go home to see my babies and my family,\u201d Stewart said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">While Stewart is braving the storm, Shawntell Bell is braving her personal storm of worries and anxieties, watching news of the storm from Jacksonville while her family is sheltering in the Jamaican capital of Kingston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201c[My uncle] told me he was looking outside and it was scary as heck because trees were flying everywhere,\u201d Bell said, \u201che\u2019s never seen anything like that before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Bell runs \u201cBad Girlz Clozet,\u201d a clothing store on the Westside. Much of her family has lived in Jamaica for all of their lives, and she has been texting with her uncle since hearing about the storm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Bell told us the last text she received from him was sent at around 3:45 PM on Tuesday, reading \u201cwe are experiencing the fullest of the hurricane right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s worrying, especially because he didn\u2019t text back yet,\u201d Bell said, \u201cbut I like to be optimistic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Some local groups are already working on ways to get supplies to the islands that have been hit by Hurricane Melissa and those that may be in its path. Jimbo Stockton is one of them, a volunteer pilot who works with <a href=\"https:\/\/adventuresingodscreation.org\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/adventuresingodscreation.org\/\">\u201cAdventures in God\u2019s Creation,\u201d<\/a> a nonprofit in Jacksonville Beach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cWe want to go out and get as many supplies as we can,\u201d Stockton said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Stockton told Action News Jax he is planning to fly supplies this week out to smaller islands near Jamaica, expected to get hit by Hurricane Melissa. He plans to use his plane alongside other local volunteer pilots and their own planes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s just a big team effort to go out and help people when they\u2019re really in their time of need,\u201d Stockton said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Stockton is asking for supplies to be donated before his team flies out for the islands. He said the following items can be dropped off at the nonprofit\u2019s building on 1st Avenue:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Tarps, inverters, trash bags<\/li>\n<li>Candles, lighters, flashlights<\/li>\n<li>Water, bread, eggs, fruit, peanut butter, jelly, honey, nuts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">The Jamaican government has started its own website to help provide relief to those impacted by Hurricane Melissa.
