{"id":340140,"date":"2025-10-29T06:36:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T06:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/340140\/"},"modified":"2025-10-29T06:36:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T06:36:15","slug":"north-korea-test-fires-cruise-missiles-as-trump-visits-south-korea-nuclear-weapons-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/340140\/","title":{"rendered":"North Korea test-fires cruise missiles as Trump visits South Korea | Nuclear Weapons News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">Pyongyang says the tests in the Yellow Sea were aimed at impressing its abilities upon its \u2018enemies\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Published On 29 Oct 202529 Oct 2025<\/p>\n<p>Click here to share on social media<\/p>\n<p>share2<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-share__social-text\">Share<\/p>\n<p>North Korea has test-fired several sea-to-surface cruise missiles into its western waters, according to state media, hours before United States President Donald Trump begins a visit to South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said on Wednesday that the missiles, carried out in the Yellow Sea on Tuesday, flew for more than two hours before accurately striking targets.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>Top military official Pak Jong Chon oversaw the test and said \u201cimportant successes\u201d were being achieved in developing North Korea\u2019s \u201cnuclear forces\u201d as a war deterrent, according to KCNA.<\/p>\n<p>The test was aimed at assessing \u201cthe reliability of different strategic offensive means and impress their abilities upon the enemies\u201d, Pak said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is our responsible mission and duty to ceaselessly toughen the nuclear combat posture,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea\u2019s joint chiefs of staff said on Wednesday that the military had detected the North Korean launch preparations and that the cruise missiles were fired in the country\u2019s northwestern waters at about 3pm (06:00 GMT) on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The joint chiefs said South Korea and the US were analysing the weapons and maintaining a combined defence readiness capable of a \u201cdominant response\u201d against any North Korean provocation.<\/p>\n<p>North Korea\u2019s latest launches followed short-range ballistic missile tests <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/10\/22\/north-korea-fires-unidentified-ballistic-missiles-towards-east-sea-seoul\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last week<\/a> that it said involved a new hypersonic system designed to strengthen its nuclear war deterrent.<\/p>\n<p>The latest test came hours before an expected summit between Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in the city of Gyeongju, where South Korea is hosting this year\u2019s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/10\/25\/trump-open-to-meeting-north-koreas-kim-on-asia-trip-but-nothing-scheduled\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expressed interest<\/a> in meeting with Kim during his stay in South Korea, where he is also scheduled to hold a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n<p>However, South Korean officials have said that a Trump-Kim meeting is unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>Kim has said he still personally holds \u201cfond memories\u201d of Trump, but has also said he would only be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/22\/north-koreas-kim-says-open-to-us-talks-if-denuclearisation-demands-dropped\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">open to talks<\/a> if Washington stops insisting his country give up its nuclear weapons programme.<\/p>\n<p>North Korea has shunned any form of talks with Washington and Seoul since Kim\u2019s high-stakes nuclear diplomacy with Trump fell apart in 2019, during the US president\u2019s first term.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4067566\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/reuters_690153e0-1761694688.jpg\" alt=\"US President Donald Trump and Sanae Takaichi, Japan's prime minister, during a meeting with relatives of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea, at the Akasaka Palace state guest house in Tokyo, Japan, on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
