Despite rain and low clouds, Trans World Airlines Flight 94 bound for Paris, then Cairo, was the first to depart with passengers from what was then the world\u2019s largest airport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI consider O\u2019Hare\u2019s beginning as a long and firm step into the jet air line age, now upon us. We have the space for expansion for vast future developments that may now be entirely unguessed,\u201d Mayor Richard J. Daley said before 2,500 spectators on the second floor of the new passenger concourse.<\/p>\n<p>What did passengers not find when the airport opened?\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/ehBISg6IP_p0YDi7lBvt3cZcGOgDmyb-0lepZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gD-ZxRfwYcoRLV01s8WAXFmA3jeQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/ehBISg6IP_p0YDi7lBvt3cZcGOgDmyb-0lepZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gD-ZxRfwYcoRLV01s8WAXFmA3jeQ&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1761700385954000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0jd1hHukclTF6heDStiF8G\">Restaurants, cocktail lounges and snack bars<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 none were yet in place. (Bonnie Trafelet\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2007:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-womans-disappearance-st\/183858173\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stacy Peterson<\/a> was reported missing after failing to show up at her sister\u2019s home. Her husband Drew Peterson, a Bolingbrook police officer, was the last person to see her alive.<\/p>\n<p>Peterson was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2012\/09\/07\/drew-peterson-found-guilty-of-killing-his-third-wife-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found guilty<\/a> of drowning his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in 2012. He was later sentenced to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/02\/21\/chicago-history-february-21\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/02\/21\/chicago-history-february-21\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">38 years in prison<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Peterson was given an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2016\/07\/29\/drew-peterson-gets-40-extra-years-for-plot-to-kill-prosecutor\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2016\/07\/29\/drew-peterson-gets-40-extra-years-for-plot-to-kill-prosecutor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">additional 40 years<\/a> in prison in 2016 for trying to hire someone to kill the prosecutor who put him behind bars.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Chicago Bears tight end Zach Miller, right, greets a supporter on Dec. 11, 2017, after a news conference at Halas Hall in Lake Forest and his first media availability since suffering a severe left leg injury on Oct. 29, 2017, against the New Orleans Saints. (Chris Walker\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2017:<\/strong> Chicago Bears tight end <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-a-double-disaster-bears\/183858764\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zach Miller<\/a> dislocated his knee and tore his popliteal artery trying to catch a touchdown pass against the New Orleans Saints at the Superdome.<\/p>\n<p>It was so serious that Miller needed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2017\/10\/30\/zach-miller-in-good-spirits-after-serious-knee-injury-says-coach-john-fox\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">urgent vascular surgery<\/a>, a procedure that went beyond trying to save his football career to trying to save his ability to walk.<\/p>\n<p>As he was taken into surgery, Miller remembered saying one thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just remember telling Doc, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2017\/12\/08\/zach-miller-says-he-just-remembers-telling-doctor-save-my-leg-please\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Save my leg, please,\u2019<\/a>\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n<p>Miller needed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/04\/08\/bears-honor-zach-miller-with-the-ed-block-courage-award\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nine surgeries<\/a> before he could try to walk again. (Chris Sweda\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2020:<\/strong> The Chicago White Sox stunned the baseball world by announcing the hiring of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2020\/10\/29\/hall-of-famer-tony-la-russa-76-hired-as-chicago-white-sox-manager-im-fired-up-im-ready-to-go\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tony La Russa<\/a> \u2014 who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/sports\/white-sox\/ct-cb-chicago-white-sox-tony-la-russa-timeline-20201016-xgiz3zlncvhnbcakosmldrmvti-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/sports\/white-sox\/ct-cb-chicago-white-sox-tony-la-russa-timeline-20201016-xgiz3zlncvhnbcakosmldrmvti-story.html\">led the Sox to a division title in 1983<\/a> \u2014 as their new manager.<\/p>\n<p>A Sox spokesperson confirmed to the Tribune that the organization was aware of La Russa\u2019s February 2020 arrest for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2020\/11\/10\/tony-la-russa-told-arresting-officer-im-a-hall-of-famer-brother-youre-trying-to-embarrass-me-according-to-a-report-on-the-chicago-white-sox-managers-dui\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">driving under the influence<\/a> before hiring him.
