GYEONGJU, South Korea (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump<\/a> said Wednesday that \u201cit\u2019s too bad\u201d he\u2019s not allowed to run for a third term, conceding the constitutional reality even as he expressed interest in continuing to serve.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you read it, it\u2019s pretty clear,\u201d Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One enroute from Japan to South Korea. \u201cI\u2019m not allowed to run. It\u2019s too bad.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president\u2019s comments, which continue his on-again, off-again musings about a third term, came a day after House Speaker Mike Johnson<\/a> said it would be impossible for Trump to stay in the White House.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t see the path for that,\u201d he told reporters at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday. <\/p>\n

Johnson, the Republican leader who has built his career by drawing closer to Trump<\/a>, said he discussed the issue with the president, and he thinks Trump understands the situation. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe and I have talked about the constrictions of the Constitution,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The speaker described how the Constitution\u2019s 22nd Amendment does not allow for a third presidential term and changing that, with a new amendment, would be a cumbersome, decade-long process winning over states and votes in Congress.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I can tell you that we are not going to take our foot off the gas pedal,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to deliver for the American people, and we\u2019ve got a great run ahead of us \u2014 he\u2019ll have four strong years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump stopped short of characterizing his conversation with Johnson, and his description of the prohibition on third terms was somewhat less definitive. <\/p>\n

\u201cBased on what I read, I guess I\u2019m not allowed to run,\u201d he said Wednesday. \u201cSo we\u2019ll see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has repeatedly raised the idea of trying to stay in power.<\/a> Hats saying \u201cTrump 2028\u201d<\/a> are passed out as souvenir keepsakes to lawmakers and others visiting the White House, and Trump\u2019s former 2016 campaign chief-turned-podcaster Stephen Bannon<\/a> has revived the idea of a third Trump term.<\/p>\n

Trump told reporters<\/a> Monday on Air Force One on his trip to Japan that \u201cI would love to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to say that his Republican Party has great options for the next presidential election \u2014 in Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was traveling with him, and Vice President JD Vance, who visited with senators at the Capitol on Tuesday. <\/p>\n

\u201cAll I can tell you is that we have a great group of people,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

Pressed if he was ruling out a third-term bid, Trump demurred. Asked about a strategy where he could run as vice president, which could be allowed under the laws, and then work himself in the presidency, he dismissed the idea as \u201ctoo cute.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019d be allowed to do that, but I wouldn\u2019t do that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The chit chat comes as Trump, in his words and actions<\/a>, is showing just how far he can push the presidency<\/a> \u2014 and daring anyone to stop him.<\/p>\n

He is sending National Guard troops to cities<\/a> over the objections of several state governors; accepting untold millions in private donations<\/a> to pay the military and fund the new White House ballroom<\/a>, picking winners and losers<\/a> in the government shutdown.<\/p>\n

Johnson, the Louisiana Republican who rose swiftly to become House speaker with Trump\u2019s blessing, dismissed worries about a potential third term by the president\u2019s critics whose \u201chair is on fire.\u201d<\/p>\n
