Recently, dozens of our journalists worked at The Hub, affiliated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stphilips1600.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">St. Philip\u2019s School and Community Center<\/a>. They delivered food to our staff and visitors. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/food\/restaurant-openings\/2025\/02\/25\/ruthies-cafe-south-dallas\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The cafe is part of nonprofit The Good Foundation<\/a>, which provides food and employment opportunities to underserved communities. Built in 1949 as a whites-only movie theater, its identity evolved in the 1950s. It became a hub for African American audiences, hosting performances by legends like Tina Turner, Gladys Knight, B.B. King, Dave Chappelle and Prince.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">After many openings and closings, Erykah Badu relaunched the theater in 2003, naming it Black Forest Theater, honoring its legacy as an African American venue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2024\/11\/13\/8-million-grant-to-help-renovate-historic-forest-theater-project-in-south-dallas\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Forest Forward is the nonprofit leading the renovations to the theater.<\/a> The space will include a 1,000-seat concert hall, an immersive art studio, visual art studio, media lab, podcast studio, cafe and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><b>Nijeul X, <\/b>the new Forest Theater director, talked with me about the challenges \u2014 and his vision for the space.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:900 \/ 1280\"   class=\"dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain\" width=\"900\" height=\"1280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/7PPQVERYRJAGXG6GXNV6J7P53I.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Michael Hogue<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s space for people to see work, and there\u2019s space for people to connect in an immersive experience with art,\u201d he said. \u201cLet me tell you, from the rooftop on down&#8230; What a gift. I highly recommend the Sweet &amp; Chill Latte.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Originally from New York, the Reeders have lived in Dallas for over two decades and they have positive vibes about the potential for the burgeoning neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:950 \/ 1117\"   class=\"dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain\" width=\"950\" height=\"1117\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IPCOJUGLQBEQJAB6H363XD6LVA.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Michael Hogue<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve also seen a lot more police presence, so there have been less stragglers coming by,\u201d said Keesha.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><b>Lisa Elin,<\/b> a creative director, writer and Peabody winner for her virtual reality\/immersive documentary, Vestige, has lived coast-to-coast and in between: Harlem, Venice Beach, Salt Lake City, then moving to Lower Greenville and Junius Heights. She and her husband, JB Moresco, recently planted roots in the South Boulevard\/Park Row Historic District in South Dallas.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1000 \/ 1000\"   class=\"dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/UK2QXOJBBVDRRIKZWMDSTKJUFQ.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Michael Hogue<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Located behind Ruthie\u2019s Cafe is the<b> <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stphilips1600.org\/community\/wcc.cfm\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.stphilips1600.org\/community\/wcc.cfm\">WeCreation Center,<\/a> a beautiful community hub for human-centered design. The center offers classes and certifications in leatherwork, sewing, drone piloting, video editing, embroidery digitizing, 3D printing, podcasting and graphic design. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Co-founded by master leather craftsman <b>Arthur Porter<\/b>, the WeCreation Center partnered with St. Philip\u2019s in 2023 to create a community center that works with students, seniors and other groups to promote creativity and entrepreneurship. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:800 \/ 1416\"   class=\"dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain\" width=\"800\" height=\"1416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IY77XMVAQJCLBJ33A2QPU5KCDE.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Michael Hogue<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><b>Ken Smith,<\/b> president of Revitalize South Dallas Coalition, grew up in South Dallas. He sat down to talk about many of the issues he thinks The News should be illuminating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cI think it\u2019s important that we put emphasis in every arena on ownership and control of the property and institutions in our community. If we don\u2019t own and control them, then we are at the beck and call of others,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cLet\u2019s control the future and destiny of South Dallas with our own money, our own resources, and with like-minded partners who see the vision for the community the same as we see the vision for our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">He also talked about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/opinion\/editorials\/2025\/10\/05\/we-can-still-save-fair-park-heres-how\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">working tirelessly to structure a deal to manage Fair Park, only to see it come to pieces<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><b>Sais Daniel<\/b> is the managing director of community impact for <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgebuilders.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bridge Builders.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWe try to address the access that has been historically denied to the neighbors in Bonton,\u201d she said. \u201cWe do that through after-school programming, hosting a community pantry, a community eye clinic, anything from K-12, and we have a senior home delivery program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:950 \/ 1372\"   class=\"dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain\" width=\"950\" height=\"1372\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/KPU3HJGTQNHYHDNVGVNZ6XS77A.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Michael Hogue<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of money has been given to South Dallas and I think that collaboration within South Dallas is something that is lacking,\u201d said Daniel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cI think that collaboration could help drive more changes in South Dallas, because you know who is collaborating?
