It has now weakened to Category 2. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/refresh\/graphics_at3+shtml\/291149.shtml?key_messages#contents\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Hurricane Center<\/a> warned that Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic are facing dangerous flash floods and landslides. The storm is responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/weather\/live-news\/hurricane-melissa-jamaica-landfall-tuesday-climate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at least seven deaths<\/a> as of Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Behind the storm, 2.8 million Jamaicans are reeling from the strongest hurricane to ever lash the island. Melissa landed on Jamaica on Tuesday with winds at 185 miles per hour, putting it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/weather\/live-news\/hurricane-melissa-jamaica-landfall-tuesday-climate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">firmly in Category 5<\/a>. Ahead of landfall, the National Hurricane Center issued a blunt warning for Jamaica: \u201cTHIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING SITUATION! TAKE COVER NOW!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">The capitals and exclamation points are warranted. Hurricane Melissa is an extraordinary storm, even among the many massive, fast-growing, devastating cyclones that have been erupting in the Atlantic Ocean in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Already, it\u2019s the strongest storm on record to hit the island and is poised to cause landslides, power outages, and flash floods. Forecasters expect this one storm will dish out as much rain as <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/10\/1166197\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">three whole months<\/a> in Jamaica\u2019s rainy season, up to 27 inches of precipitation, while coastal areas may see a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/stories\/hurricane-melissa-wfp-hand-jamaica-responds-its-worst-storm-ever\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">storm surge as high as 13 feet<\/a>. Melissa is also poised to extend its swinging arms into Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">It\u2019s clear that Melissa will leave a lasting scar on the islands in its path. It\u2019s likely to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/yaleclimateconnections.org\/2025\/10\/jamaica-braces-for-cat-5-hurricane-melissa-earths-strongest-storm-of-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strongest tropical cyclone<\/a> in the world this year, and aid agencies are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/stories\/hurricane-melissa-wfp-hand-jamaica-responds-its-worst-storm-ever\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">preparing for a humanitarian disaster<\/a>. \u201cFor Jamaica, it will be the storm of the century for sure,\u201d World Meteorological Organization tropical cyclone specialist Anne-Claire Fontan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/hurricane-melissa-jamaica-its-strongest-recorded-history\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told reporters in Geneva, Switzerland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">As Melissa starts to leave Jamaica behind and ventures further north in the Caribbean, here are a few key things to keep in mind:<\/p>\n<p>Melissa is unusually big and powerful<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">It\u2019s hard to overstate just how powerful this storm is, and how quickly it erupted. Melissa is now tied with Hurricane Dorian in 2019 and the 1935 Labor Day hurricane as the strongest storm to ever make landfall, and certainly the strongest to hit Jamaica. The last time Jamaica took a direct hit from a hurricane was in 1988 from Gilbert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Melissa also grew quickly. Its wind speed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/oct\/28\/hurricane-melissa-a-visual-guide-to-the-strongest-storm-to-hit-jamaica-in-almost-two-centuries\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than doubled in 24 hours<\/a>, from 70 mph to 140 mph. NOAA via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>A storm doesn\u2019t have to be strong to be dangerous<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">A hurricane\u2019s devastation doesn\u2019t only come from its strong winds. Even a weaker cyclone can leave a trail of death and destruction when it hits a vulnerable area, and much of the lasting havoc comes from water, not wind. Earlier this year, the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry, for example, moved inland and collided with another weather system over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/climate\/419017\/central-texas-floods-early-warning-flash-flood-alley\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Texas and triggered flash floods<\/a> that killed at least 90 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Jamaica is particularly vulnerable because its mountainous geography can create the ideal conditions for flash floods. And as the country faces a <a href=\"https:\/\/wiredja.com\/index.php\/categories\/newsberg\/news\/jamaica-numbers-dont-add-up-opposition-challenges-pm-holness-on-70-000-housing-promise\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">housing shortage<\/a> and rising prices that are driving many into substandard living conditions, much of the island\u2019s housing stock is unlikely to withstand the storm unscathed. Jamaica has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/oct\/28\/hurricane-melissa-a-visual-guide-to-the-strongest-storm-to-hit-jamaica-in-almost-two-centuries\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">enough shelters for 20,000 people<\/a>, so most residents are likely to brave the storm at home. Officials are worried that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/27\/weather\/jamaica-evacuation-orders-shelters.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">not enough people had evacuated ahead of the storm in<\/a> low-lying areas prone to flooding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">\u201cThere is no infrastructure in the region that can withstand a Category 5,\u201d said Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/weather\/2025\/10\/28\/hurricane-melissa-jamaica-damage\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">news conference Monday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Melissa is coming at the tail end of a seemingly quiet season<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30. In its early season outlook in May, NOAA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/news-release\/noaa-predicts-above-normal-2025-atlantic-hurricane-season\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">anticipated a 60 percent chance of \u201cabove-normal\u201d hurricane activity<\/a> in the Atlantic Ocean this year, with up to 19 named storms and five of those turning into major hurricanes. The agency\u2019s updated forecast in August slightly lowered the chances of above-normal activity to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/news-release\/prediction-remains-on-track-for-above-normal-atlantic-hurricane-season\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">50 percent<\/a>. Forecasters saw that there was ample warm water in the Atlantic Ocean \u2014 a necessary ingredient for hurricanes \u2014 and atmospheric conditions that make it easier for cyclones to form.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">From an American perspective, this season felt unusually quiet. There have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/data\/tcr\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">13 named Atlantic storms<\/a> this year so far. This year became the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.miami.edu\/stories\/2025\/10\/a-waltz-over-water-but-no-landfall-dance.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first time in a decade<\/a> that no hurricane made landfall in the US by the end of September. But while most tropical storms in the Atlantic didn\u2019t hit the US, several did strike the Caribbean. There were also major storms that churned out at sea and still caused houses to collapse in places like the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/outer-banks-homes-collapse-hurricane-beachside-north-carolina-1c277f5ea323e2464e0d83a130cdcea7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Outer Banks in North Carolina<\/a>. Mark Withee\/US Air Force via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">While the season as a whole may have seemed unusually calm before Melissa, there\u2019s still another month to go, and the fuel for another massive storm remains ready.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">And historically, some of our most catastrophic storms hit during unusually quiet seasons. \u201cThere\u2019s this old phrase: all it takes is one,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/people.miami.edu\/profile\/b93c30c0a073b432b8b9931f681ea2a0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Fischer<\/a>, an assistant professor at the University of Miami studying hurricane modeling. Fischer noted that hurricane activity in 1992 was significantly below average, but that was the year Hurricane Andrew struck Florida and became, at the time, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/lmk\/HurricaneAndrew30Years\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">costliest storm to hit the US<\/a>, causing $26 billion in damages. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 broke that record with more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/mob\/katrina\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$100 billion in damages<\/a> during a more active season. \u201cWe have to be careful before we make assessments of this hurricane season,\u201d Fischer said. \u201cSo far it\u2019s been a bit, perhaps a bit quieter than what was expected in terms of the total number of named storms, but the book is not done being written yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 lg8ac5a xkp0cg1\">By late Tuesday, Hurricane Melissa had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/weather\/live-news\/hurricane-melissa-jamaica-landfall-tuesday-climate?post-id=cmhapcdg30000356l1deahlw3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weakened to a Category 4<\/a> as the storm continued to move across the country.
