{"id":34206,"date":"2025-07-03T02:53:08","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T02:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/34206\/"},"modified":"2025-07-03T02:53:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T02:53:08","slug":"philadelphia-native-cycling-across-the-country-to-raise-money-for-lung-cancer-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/34206\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia native cycling across the country to raise money for lung cancer patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Twenty-year-old Jack Owens made a pit stop Wednesday at Valley Forge National Park in Pennsylvania.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Philadelphia cyclist is riding coast to coast to help lung cancer patients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been a long journey,&#8221; Owens said.<\/p>\n<p>He started the 48-day trip May 20 in San Francisco and will end in Ocean City. He&#8217;s aiming to raise $100,000 for lung cancer patients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s something that affects everybody,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s the leading cancer killer among every demographic in every state.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Owens&#8217; grandmother died from lung cancer, which inspired her son, John Matthews, to start a charity called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhbe.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ride Hard Breathe Easy<\/a>. Matthews is Owens&#8217; uncle.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When Mom was sick, I just said I would do something,&#8221; Matthews said. &#8220;I had no idea I was going to ride my bike across the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Matthews, who&#8217;s doing part of the ride with Owens, completed his cross-country trek in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s amazing,&#8221; Matthews said. &#8220;It&#8217;s really inspiring.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The money that Owens raises on this ride will help lung cancer patients with getting to doctor&#8217;s appointments and paying for food and utility bills.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They just need someone to give them a hand and we&#8217;re fortunate to do it,&#8221; Matthews said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Owens, who went to St. Joe&#8217;s Prep, is now a junior at Notre Dame, and he&#8217;s dedicating part of his summer break to the family mission of helping patients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On their way to the shore where the 3,600 mile journey will end on July 6, they&#8217;ll stop at some hospitals that treat the patients they help, like Fox Chase Cancer Center.<\/p>\n<p>      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/philadelphia\/search\/author\/stephanie-stahl\/\" class=\"content-author__name\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephanie  Stahl<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"content-author__text\">Stephanie Stahl is an Emmy Award-winning health reporter.
