{"id":342070,"date":"2025-10-30T01:49:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T01:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/342070\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T01:49:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T01:49:12","slug":"colorado-seeks-to-halt-space-command-move-to-alabama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/342070\/","title":{"rendered":"Colorado seeks to halt Space Command move to Alabama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DENVER (AP) \u2014 Colorado officials filed a lawsuit Wednesday claiming the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/space-command-trump-alabama-colorado-96589ce26df5ddaf59e2fc856084a8ca\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">relocation of U.S. Space Command<\/a> to Alabama was illegally motivated by President Donald Trump\u2019s desire to punish Colorado for its <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fact-check-Colorado-voting-constitution-591713471984\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mail-in voting<\/a> system.<\/p>\n<p>The litigation announced by Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser asks a federal judge to block the move as unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>Trump chose Huntsville, Alabama, to house Space Command during the closing days of his first term. But in 2023, then-President Joe Biden announced the command would be <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/space-command-biden-colorado-alabama-382b12b57733848fd1d083227aefa0bf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">permanently located<\/a> in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which had been serving as its temporary headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>Trump in September said Colorado\u2019s mail-in voting system \u201cplayed a big factor\u201d in moving the headquarters to Alabama.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem with Colorado is that they have a very corrupt voting system,\u201d Trump said. He said earlier plans to relocate the headquarters to Huntsville were \u201cwrongfully obstructed\u201d by the Biden administration. <\/p>\n<p>The decision capped a four-year tug of war between the two states and opposing administrations. It infuriated both Democratic and Republican officials in Colorado, which has a booming aerospace industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump has unlawfully retaliated against Colorado to punish the state for its exercise of sovereign authority to regulate elections,\u201d Colorado officials wrote in Wednesday\u2019s lawsuit. \u201cThe Supreme Court has long recognized that the Constitution prohibits the use of retaliation, punishment, or other coercive action in response to the exercise of constitutional right or power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-a50000\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 18px; margin: 0 0 8px 0; line-height: 1.4;\">\n      Stay up to date with the latest news from AP.\n  <\/p>\n<p>  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsapp.com\/channel\/0029Va7Tv2j59PwNEyqGCi1y\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"display: inline-flex; align-items: center; background-color: #191919; color: #ffffff; padding: 10px 20px; border-radius: 6px; text-decoration: none; font-weight: 600; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><br \/>\n    Follow on<br \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761588853_344_\" alt=\"WhatsApp\" style=\"height: 18px;\"\/><br \/>\n  <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Space Command\u2019s functions include enabling satellite-based navigation and troop communication and providing warning of missile launches.<\/p>\n<p>White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said Wednesday that the Huntsville location \u201cputs them in the best situation to improve readiness and protect our national interests while providing the necessary infrastructure capacity, community support, cost effectiveness, and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did not directly respond to the lawsuit\u2019s claim that the relocation was punishment for Colorado\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fact-check-Colorado-voting-constitution-591713471984\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mail-in voting system,<\/a> which experts have said is legal and secure.<\/p>\n<p>Huntsville \u2014 nicknamed Rocket City because of its role building the first rockets for the U.S. space program \u2014 is home to the Army\u2019s Redstone Arsenal, NASA\u2019s Marshall Space Flight Center and the Army\u2019s Space and Missile Defense Command.<\/p>\n<p>Alabama officials have said about 1,400 Space Command jobs would transition to Redstone Arsenal over the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said in a statement Wednesday that his state would vigorously defend the relocation decision in court. He called Colorado\u2019s lawsuit \u201ca partisan attempt to overturn a lawful, evidence-based decision repeatedly validated by military experts, independent reviews, and congressional oversight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/space-command-trump-huntsville-colorado-ef549110126cc5de2da45d59255702bd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A review<\/a> by the Defense Department inspector general was inconclusive and could not determine why Colorado was chosen over Alabama.
