{"id":342536,"date":"2025-10-30T06:43:19","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T06:43:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/342536\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T06:43:19","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T06:43:19","slug":"ontarios-premier-says-us-ambassador-should-apologize-for-tirade-against-his-diplomat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/342536\/","title":{"rendered":"Ontario&#8217;s premier says US ambassador should apologize for tirade against his diplomat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO (AP) \u2014 The leader of Canada\u2019s most populous province on Wednesday said the U.S. ambassador to Canada should apologize to Ontario\u2019s representative in Washington after the ambassador reportedly shouted profanely at him about the province\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-trump-tariffs-ontario-ford-reagan-ad-b8da66e059a718927ae36ef05da4e987\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">anti-tariff ad<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario Premier Doug Ford said U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra owes David Paterson an apology for an \u201cabsolutely unacceptable\u201d tirade that Ford said is \u201cunbecoming for an ambassador.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An official familiar with the matter confirmed that Hoekstra shouted at Paterson during a reception hosted by the Canadian American Business Council in Ottawa on Monday night. The official spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPete, you\u2019ve got to call Dave up and apologize. It\u2019s simple,\u201d Ford told journalists, adding: \u201cI get it. You\u2019re ticked off. But call the guy up, because you\u2019re a good guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy declined comment.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario\u2019s television ad <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-trump-tariffs-reagan-tariffs-e0e6a8f1fa49f00c9e8d08df405ee299\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">criticizes President Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs<\/a> by citing a speech by former U.S. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/ronald-reagan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Ronald Reagan<\/a>. The ad infuriated <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump<\/a>, who said he plans to raise tariffs on imports of Canadian goods by an extra 10%.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said the ad misrepresented the position of Reagan, a two-term president and a beloved figure in the Republican Party. But Reagan was wary of tariffs and used much of the 1987 address featured in Ontario\u2019s ad to spell out the case against tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe intention wasn\u2019t to go poke the president in the eye,\u201d Ford said. \u201cMy intention was to get a conversation going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ford said <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-canada-state-hoekstra-ambassador-857bb3ec7e156acf839a158dda380206\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hoekstra<\/a> should understand why Canadians are upset.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have someone attacking your province, attacking your country, constantly saying it\u2019s the 51st state, trying to take our auto jobs down to the U.S., taking our manufacturing, our life science jobs, trying to take our steel jobs,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat do they expect me to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ford pulled the ad Monday after it was shown during the first two games of the baseball World Series over the weekend. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy doesn\u2019t the President start being nice, play nice in the sandbox to his biggest customer,\u201d Ford said. <\/p>\n<p>Trump said he won\u2019t talk to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for a while, even though both are in South Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor those that are asking, we didn\u2019t come to South Korea to see Canada!\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social.<\/p>\n<p>However, they were at same table for a dinner hosted by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.
