Large celebrations are being held across the Valley, including one historic church in downtown Phoenix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">St. Mary\u2019s Roman Catholic Basilica, the oldest Catholic parish church in the metro Phoenix area, is hosting its 12th annual D\u00eda de los Muertos festival this weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">During D\u00eda de los Muertos, family members set up ofrendas filled with bright marigold flowers, photos of loved ones and pets, and their favorite foods and drinks as offerings. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from those who have departed, joining the living for the grand celebration.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block\" alt=\"St. Mary\u2019s Roman Catholic Basilica, the oldest Catholic parish church in the metro Phoenix...\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ABUMEFBXWVGXPOSNGNFBHTDG7I.JPG\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" \/>St. Mary\u2019s Roman Catholic Basilica, the oldest Catholic parish church in the metro Phoenix area, is hosting its 12th annual D\u00eda de los Muertos festival this weekend.(St. Mary\u2019s Roman Catholic Basilica)<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s a time to honor the memory of our loved ones who have gone before us. It\u2019s an opportunity to share in something that\u2019s deeply rooted in culture and tradition, and profoundly Christian,\u201d Fr. Fernando Camou explained. \u201cAll these different symbols, every flower, marigolds, they all have symbolic meaning, reminding us of our faith. This is not a superstition, this is an expression of love; a tangible expression, reminder that our loved ones are still alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">Fr. Fernando says while some may feel sorrow from their loved ones passing, the celebration represents a time of hope. \u201cGrief and gratitude, they go together with our faith,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">A community ofrenda will be set up, and guests are encouraged to bring non-original photos of family members to place on the ofrenda. Over 30 vendors will be set up at the artisan market, and children can take part in free activities and face painting.
