{"id":343599,"date":"2025-10-30T17:11:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T17:11:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/343599\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T17:11:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T17:11:14","slug":"youth-mental-health-crisis-new-reports-shed-light-on-whats-driving-it-and-why-social-media-is-an-amplifier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/343599\/","title":{"rendered":"Youth mental health crisis: New reports shed light on what\u2019s driving it and why social media is an \u2018amplifier\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">The second report \u2013 Addressing Youth Mental Distress \u2013 builds on this by reviewing what works to improve youth mental health, including tackling systemic issues such as family violence and child poverty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">The reports also considered the influence of social media, finding it was \u201can amplifier on both negative and positive influences playing a role in mental health\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cDeclining youth mental health has implications for lifelong wellbeing, education and workforce outcomes, and the future prosperity of our country,\u201d Gluckman, the former chief science advisor to the Prime Minister (2009-2018), said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cSupporting youth mental health is not just a moral necessity \u2013 it\u2019s a public health priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">The reports are timely. They follow a report in June from the Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission, which found the system under \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/mental-health-and-wellbeing-commssion-report-system-not-working-for-maori-young-people\/GWIRYUTQLVEPLEHRU6DIOPY4LE\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/mental-health-and-wellbeing-commssion-report-system-not-working-for-maori-young-people\/GWIRYUTQLVEPLEHRU6DIOPY4LE\/\">immense pressure<\/a>\u201d as mental wellbeing worsened, including among young people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">The commission is due to release a report next week into the state of our crisis responses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">Meanwhile, youth unemployment is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/young-people-bear-the-brunt-youth-unemployment-hits-23\/6ZFAIGPWXRFAHG3S7REUMX45AY\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/young-people-bear-the-brunt-youth-unemployment-hits-23\/6ZFAIGPWXRFAHG3S7REUMX45AY\/\">four times higher<\/a> than the national average, child poverty forecasts show no improvement in coming years, and frontline organisations say it has become much harder to find emergency housing for the young and the homeless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">The Government has set several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/new-mental-health-targets-and-hint-at-alcohol-law-reform-revealed-in-govts-health-roadmap\/IPUPVK4BWVA3PEIPO2WA4BTYXM\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/new-mental-health-targets-and-hint-at-alcohol-law-reform-revealed-in-govts-health-roadmap\/IPUPVK4BWVA3PEIPO2WA4BTYXM\/\">mental health targets<\/a> and the latest results show improving access to mental health and addiction services, though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tewhatuora.govt.nz\/assets\/Corporate-information\/Planning-and-performance\/Health-targets\/Mental-health-and-addiction-targets\/Quarter-One-2024-25\/Mental-health-and-addiction-target-results-2024-25-Quarter-One.pdf\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tewhatuora.govt.nz\/assets\/Corporate-information\/Planning-and-performance\/Health-targets\/Mental-health-and-addiction-targets\/Quarter-One-2024-25\/Mental-health-and-addiction-target-results-2024-25-Quarter-One.pdf\">this varies region to region<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">The Government is also looking into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/social-media-ban-for-under-16s-a-good-start-or-ineffective-half-baked-populism\/YPXDBEABK5ALFP4RSZV62RJOXY\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/social-media-ban-for-under-16s-a-good-start-or-ineffective-half-baked-populism\/YPXDBEABK5ALFP4RSZV62RJOXY\/\">banning social media for under-16s<\/a> and the House will soon consider National MP Catherine Wedd\u2019s Member\u2019s Bill proposing such a ban, after it was pulled from the ballot last week.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"A new report identifies four key issues that impact young people's mental health, which are 'amplified' by social media. Image \/ Pathways to wellbeing: A youth-led exploration of mental health in Aotearoa New Zealand<\/p>\n<p>What young people say distresses them<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">The first report attempts to fill the void around a lack of understanding of \u201cwhich issues matter most to young people\u201d and how they interact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">What sets the research apart is the richness of the data from 19 workshops. Instead of standard interviews, survey questions or focus group sessions, the workshops included group activities to engage and encourage participants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">The report finds four main sources of mental distress:<\/p>\n<ul role=\"list\" aria-label=\"unordered list with 4 items\" data-test-ui=\"article__unordered_list\">\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">The world young people live in, including the economy, climate change and a polarised and unequal society; feeling \u201chopeless about the future and helpless about the possibility of change\u201d.<\/li>\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">The pressures they experience; feeling \u201coverwhelmed and exhausted\u201d by expectations to succeed academically, support their families financially, or take care of siblings.<\/li>\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">The connections they need; from friends to family to community and the risks of isolation.<\/li>\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">Finding their path: navigating identity \u2013 stressful, complicated and sometimes feeling contrived \u2013 and independence in a complex and uncertain world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThey\u2019re all interconnected,\u201d lead author and clinical psychologist Dr Jessica Stubbing told the Herald.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cBut foundationally, it\u2019s that feeling of: \u2018The world we live in is stressing me out. The world we live in is overwhelming.\u2019 That was the key issue that was really coming through strongly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">That feeling wasn\u2019t just about their local community, Stubbing said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cA lot of the young people spoke about their immediate community; do I feel like there are jobs in the town that I live in? Do I feel like there are educational opportunities where I\u2019m based?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAnd then we had some young people talking about things like climate change, like the flooding [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/auckland-floods-cyclone-gabrielle-and-a-year-of-extreme-weather-the-front-page\/2WDQNVGHLBHM5NEQAQOIUKKLIM\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/auckland-floods-cyclone-gabrielle-and-a-year-of-extreme-weather-the-front-page\/2WDQNVGHLBHM5NEQAQOIUKKLIM\/\">in 2023<\/a>], but also about events in the Pacific.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">The participants were from Auckland and Northland, but Stubbing suggested some of the themes would apply nationwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIn our rural sessions, we talked a lot about access to infrastructure and services, which I suspect will be very true for other rural areas outside of Auckland and Northland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe also talked about feeling like there might not be enough resource in some areas and the impact of some of the climate events like the flooding, which I also suspect would have been felt outside of that region too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Professor Sir Peter Gluckman is a former chief science advisor to the Prime Minister (2009-2018). Photo \/ Brett Phibbs<\/p>\n<p>No silver bullet<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">The second report, Addressing Youth Mental Distress, outlined six areas for action:<\/p>\n<ul role=\"list\" aria-label=\"unordered list with 6 items\" data-test-ui=\"article__unordered_list\">\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">Tackling sources of distress such as poverty, discrimination, and family instability.<\/li>\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">Equipping young people with resilience to help manage uncertainty.<\/li>\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">Providing opportunities to connect in wh\u0101nau and schools, and with cultural identity.<\/li>\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">Improving experiences at school, where achievement pressure and negative environments weigh heavily.<\/li>\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">Expanding access to mental health support.<\/li>\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">Addressing the impact of social media as both a risk and an opportunity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">The report highlighted the strong correlation between adverse childhood experiences and depression and anxiety later in life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cTargeting child poverty and family violence with early intervention approaches will have a significant impact on the mental health of children as they grow into adolescence and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">Lead author and mental health researcher Dr Madeline Hayward said the systemic issues underpinned some of the issues \u201cat the more acute end\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cBut they\u2019re all important, and honing in on one solution to youth mental health is never going to work. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cA theme across all six areas was the impact that adversity can have in undercutting mental wellbeing. Equally, the extent to which someone might be able to find connection and belonging in school can be undercut, if young people and their families are contending with a host of adverse circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">A key challenge was the lack of New Zealand data on the effectiveness of interventions, including those modelled on what\u2019s worked well overseas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s incredibly hard to say for sure that those things are happening in such a way that are making a positive difference,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s something we need to address, and that would require quite a large rethinking of our infrastructure and culture around evaluation [so] funding decisions can be made on data, rather than being based on assumptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">The Government is attempting to address this, in part through a data-based approach to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/social-investment-20-the-answer-to-lifting-up-our-most-deprived-or-a-trojan-horse-for-smaller-government-and-privatising-services\/L47MDNLKS5FOHN54G55NGVRQJ4\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/social-investment-20-the-answer-to-lifting-up-our-most-deprived-or-a-trojan-horse-for-smaller-government-and-privatising-services\/L47MDNLKS5FOHN54G55NGVRQJ4\/\">Social Investment 2.0<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of promise in that approach,\u201d Hayward said, \u201cbut a message from this report is that we don\u2019t want to be overemphasising the role of one agency or one service. It needs to be something that\u2019s happening across national government, local government, across communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">Effective policies would require significant funding, the report said: wraparound support for vulnerable families, better access to mental health services, adequate mentoring, including at schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cBut the cost of inadequate action is obvious. Photo \/ 123rf<\/p>\n<p>The good and the bad of social media<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">Both reports looked at social media, including how it can be a force for good in terms of young people finding connection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">This was particularly prominent for marginalised groups, such as those in the rainbow or disability communities, but also for those in rural areas with niche interests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cClassical music is the one that I remember really vividly, this young person speaking about a love of classical music,\u201d Stubbing said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIn a small rural town, it\u2019s pretty hard to find people in your local area with an interest in classical music, but online there are spaces to find those communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">Social media also presented opportunities to feel seen and heard, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThis benefit speaks to this idea of the world we live in, and the helplessness and the hopelessness a lot of young people feel,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cSocial media can create a space where young people feel like they\u2019re contributing, like they\u2019re a part of the world, whether that be participating in a petition or learning about an issue that matters to them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIn an offline world, a lot of young people are really alienated civically and don\u2019t feel like they have that engagement and that voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">Hayward said there was no conclusive evidence that social media, in and of itself, was harmful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cSome evidence tells us that there may be patterns of usage that are harmful, but as a standalone thing, social media often gets overinflated as the root cause of all evils and all youth mental distress. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThat\u2019s not what the evidence tells us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">She pointed to the need for young people\u2019s perspectives in any debate about banning social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhen we\u2019re talking about risk and benefits, we need to make sure young people\u2019s views are platformed as loudly as those of adults, who also have very valid concerns. But we shouldn\u2019t be considering one without the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">Stubbing said the workshops showed a range of opinions about social media, with the majority somewhere in the middle of the good-bad spectrum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIf we were to take social media away today, the underlying issues that social media is exacerbating aren\u2019t going anywhere,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe discrimination young people are experiencing, they\u2019re experiencing offline as well as online. The hate speech they\u2019re exposed to is offline as well as online. The highly sexualised content is offline as well as online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThere are positives with social media that we don\u2019t get if social media is taken away. Photo \/ 123rf<\/p>\n<p>Is the crisis worsening?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">The release of the reports follows the 2018 He Ara Oranga report into mental health and addiction, which included a survey of 1000 young people. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">Those results highlighted a similar plethora of issues including economic insecurity, unaffordable housing, loss of community and concern over body image, the environment and being well-equipped for the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">The He Ara Oranga recommendations have become a benchmark for the Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission\u2019s monitoring report, in June this year, which had four key findings:<\/p>\n<ul role=\"list\" aria-label=\"unordered list with 4 items\" data-test-ui=\"article__unordered_list\">\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">The percentage of people experiencing high or very high levels of mental distress has considerably increased since 2019\/20, and remains higher among M\u0101ori, women and young people.<\/li>\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">The mental health and addiction system is under immense pressure; M\u0101ori, Pacific peoples, young people and disabled people are experiencing much higher unmet need, while workforce shortages continue.<\/li>\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">There are promising signs, such as increased access to services with peer support, and improvements to primary prevention and early intervention.<\/li>\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">These improvements are not yet enough to drive population-level improvements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">Meanwhile, following a recessionary period and record-high inflation, youth unemployment (15 to 19) hit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/young-people-bear-the-brunt-youth-unemployment-hits-23\/6ZFAIGPWXRFAHG3S7REUMX45AY\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/young-people-bear-the-brunt-youth-unemployment-hits-23\/6ZFAIGPWXRFAHG3S7REUMX45AY\/\">23% earlier this year<\/a> \u2013 the highest in more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">Child poverty is worsening, according to the material hardship measure in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/topic\/budget-2025\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/topic\/budget-2025\/\">Budget 2025<\/a> update, with the forecast showing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treasury.govt.nz\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-05\/b25-child-poverty-report.pdf\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.treasury.govt.nz\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-05\/b25-child-poverty-report.pdf\">no statistically significant change<\/a> for the coming years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">Homelessness is also on the rise, following the tightening of criteria for emergency housing. The Government has celebrated this as getting 2100 kids out of motels and into stable homes, but officials don\u2019t know what happened to 14% of those leaving emergency housing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">Auckland-based service Kick Back, which helps young people access emergency housing, said its work has become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/emergency-housing-dramatically-harder-to-access-after-government-changes\/CUOVXM7SLZH2LDRARFF2M2BHFA\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/emergency-housing-dramatically-harder-to-access-after-government-changes\/CUOVXM7SLZH2LDRARFF2M2BHFA\/\">dramatically harder<\/a> after the tighter restrictions came into effect last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">The Government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/homeless-announcement-housing-minister-chris-bishop-outlines-actions-to-support-rough-sleepers\/JIEWZCHYJRGCLGTMJZYW72FJVU\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/homeless-announcement-housing-minister-chris-bishop-outlines-actions-to-support-rough-sleepers\/JIEWZCHYJRGCLGTMJZYW72FJVU\/\">recently announced<\/a> it would encourage greater discretion for emergency housing applications and expand the Housing First programme, which supports the homeless into permanent housing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">These challenges came through in the workshops, Stubbing said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThese indicators are consistent with what\u2019s important to young people\u2019s wellbeing, particularly in that \u2018world we live in\u2019 space: economic prospects, the difficulties of housing, of unemployment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI suspect that if we\u2019re going to see downstream progress in mental health, we would need to see upstream impacts on things like employment rates improving, particularly in our regions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Government\u2019s targets<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">Earlier this year, Minister for Mental Health Matt Doocey announced a $3.5 million annual funding boost to increase access and expand specialist mental health services for infants, children and adolescents in Tair\u0101whiti, Counties Manukau and Waitemat\u0101.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">He has five targets for mental health services:<\/p>\n<ul role=\"list\" aria-label=\"unordered list with 5 items\" data-test-ui=\"article__unordered_list\">\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">80% of people accessing specialist Mental Health and Addiction (MH&amp;A) services within three weeks of referral <\/li>\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">80% of people accessing primary MH&amp;A services through the Access and Choice programme within one week <\/li>\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">95% of mental health-related emergency department attendances admitted, discharged or transferred within six hours<\/li>\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">500 more mental health and addiction workers trained yearly by 2030<\/li>\n<li class=\"m-0 text-base font-normal -tracking-[0.01rem] text-left\">25% of mental health and addiction ringfenced investment allocated to prevention and early intervention by 2030<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">The latest data, for the April-June quarter this year, showed that the MH&amp;A access targets are being met nationally, but with variations from region to region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MbfQjTgmSESMkkDykl\" style=\"display:none\">Shorter emergency department stays was another improving stat, but the regional variation was much more pronounced, from South Canterbury at 96.3% to Capital and Coast at 37.2%.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Minister for Mental Health Matt Doocey.
