JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 A daunting countdown is on for the pause of SNAP benefits for more than 40 million Americans.<\/p>\n

The government shutdown will force the agency to stop sending out assistance on Saturday. And nearly 3 million people in Florida rely on that help every day.<\/p>\n

Sherry Call lives in a van parked near a Harveys Supermarket in Jacksonville. She depends on SNAP benefits to buy food \u2014 but in just days, those payments will stop.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m homeless too, so that means a lot,\u201d Call said. \u201cIt means I\u2019ll be starving. And we\u2019ll have to go to the churches, and there will be people stealing. And robbing. And it\u2019s the holidays.\u201d<\/p>\n

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, says no benefits will be issued on November 1 due to the prolonged government shutdown.<\/p>\n

That leaves about 42 million low-income Americans unsure how they\u2019ll pay for groceries next month.<\/p>\n

For Call, the situation feels dire.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt means a difference in me dying,\u201d she said. \u201cI mean, we\u2019ve got to have food to live.\u201d<\/p>\n

Call told Action News Jax she plans to keep panhandling to get by, but she\u2019s running out of hope.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorried, concerned, and frustrated,\u201d she said. \u201cWe thought Trump was going to be able to fix everything. Of course, he can\u2019t. But this is crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The USDA has not said when \u2014 or if \u2014 those benefits will resume.<\/p>\n
