Imagine if visiting your loved one\u2019s grave could result in your family being torn apart. For many Houstonians<\/a> this D\u00eda de los Muertos,<\/a> that fear isn\u2019t imaginary — it\u2019s a reality. <\/p>\n

This tension was recently captured in a post on Houston\u2019s Reddit community<\/a>. The original poster, also known as OP in Reddit terms, asked if anyone else felt safe celebrating the D\u00eda de los Muertos this year. The OP \u201ccan\u2019t help but think about ICE<\/a> posting up and harassing\/kidnapping people at those events like they have been all over the country\u201d. <\/p>\n

Across the country, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been very visible on social media. Videos show ICE agents performing arrests and immigration enforcement. Especially in cities like Chicago and Los Angeles where federal troops were deployed to assist in these initiatives. <\/p>\n

Some U.S. cities are going as far as canceling their annual D\u00eda de los Muertos parades over ICE raid fears. It\u2019s happening in Long Beach, California<\/a>, Berkeley, California<\/a>, and Decatur, AL<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When Chicago\u2019s Governor JB Pritzker asked Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem to halt operations during the holiday weekend (Halloween and D\u00eda de los Muertos), Noem replied, \u201cNo, we\u2019re absolutely not willing to put a pause on any work that we will do to keep communities safe.\u201d <\/p>\n

One of Houston\u2019s surrounding cities had an encounter with ICE recently. <\/p>\n

An ICE operation in Pasadena drew crowds Monday after 28-year-old Oscar Daniel Barr\u00f3n-Hernandez fled from officers to his home, according to ICE. Two passengers\u2014his brother-in-law and co-worker\u2014barricaded themselves inside with Barr\u00f3n-Hernandez\u2019s wife and four children (ages 6 months to 12 years). <\/p>\n

While protesters<\/a> gathered outside, agents eventually convinced the men to surrender. ICE reported Barr\u00f3n-Hernandez had been deported three times previously\u2014actions classified as felonies. His wife says Barr\u00f3n-Hernandez lived in the U.S. for years and has not committed any crimes. <\/p>\n

The OP isn\u2019t the only one concerned about ICE showing up to one of the many D\u00eda de los Muertos celebrations in the Houston area. <\/p>\n

Another Reddit user commented, \u201cI hate to say it but if you are in these targeted groups, I\u2019d question going out to celebrate without having a QUICK and easy way to prove your citizenship…. Take every precaution to protect yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n
