PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 A dramatic rescue by Phoenix Police of a woman who fell into a canal was captured on camera. <\/p>\n
Newly released body cam video captures the dramatic rescue that happened in the early morning hours of Oct. 14. The woman claimed she was sitting near the edge of the canal when she fell in. <\/p>\n
Police said the woman\u2019s phone was still able to call 911 despite her falling in the water. Officers used a retractable ladder to aid in their rescue efforts.<\/p>\n
\u201cKeep climbing, we\u2019re going to get you,\u201d one of the officers can be heard saying to the woman. <\/p>\n
As the woman was trying to climb out, she can be heard crying and very emotional. \u201cDon\u2019t let me go,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n
The Phoenix Fire Department said she was fortunate to make it out alright, but that isn\u2019t always the case when it comes to scenarios like this.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey (the canals) can be very dangerous, they have really steep concrete walls that make escape really difficult,\u201d said Phoenix Fire Capt. Mike Johnson. He said another danger of these canals is the deceptive current and what\u2019s underneath the water, including debris that you can get tangled up in or stuck on. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe current moves very quickly so a lot of people they see the top and think oh I can go swim in it to cool off or many different reasons it\u2019s just a bad idea.\u201d<\/p>\n
If you see someone fall in a canal. Johnson said the best thing you can do is call 911. \u201cDo not jump in after them you will become a bigger part of the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n
