Shrug your shoulders. Or maybe just juggle your hands in the air.<\/p>\n<p>Dictionary.com\u2019s word of the year isn\u2019t even really a word. It\u2019s the viral term \u201c6-7\u201d that kids and teenagers can\u2019t stop repeating and laughing about and parents and teachers can\u2019t make any sense of.<\/p>\n<p>The word \u2014 if you can call it that \u2014 exploded in popularity over the summer. It\u2019s more of an inside joke with an unclear meaning, driven by social media.<\/p>\n<p>Dictionary.com says its annual selection is a linguistic time capsule reflecting social trends and events. But the site admitted it too is a bit confused by \u201c6-7.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t worry, because we\u2019re all still trying to figure out exactly what it means,\u201d the site said in its announcement this week.<\/p>\n<p>How did \u20186-7\u2019 become a thing?<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"ap-audio-dictionary-coms-word-of-the-year-is-6-7-but-is-it-even-a-word-and-what-does-it-mean\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n                    AP AUDIO: Dictionary.com\u2019s word of the year is \u20186-7.\u2019 But is it even a word and what does it mean?\n                <\/p>\n<p class=\"AudioEnhancement-description\">AP correspondent Ed Donahue reports on a trending term no one really knows what it means.<\/p>\n<p>It all seems to trace back to rapper Skrilla\u2019s song from 2024 called \u201cDoot Doot (6-7).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That song started appearing in TikTok videos with basketball players, including the NBA\u2019s LaMelo Ball who stands 6-foot-7.<\/p>\n<p>Then a boy, now known as \u201cThe 6-7 Kid,\u201d shouted the ubiquitous phrase while another kid next to him juggled his hands in a video that went viral this year.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s all it took.<\/p>\n<p>So what does \u20186-7\u2019 mean?<\/p>\n<p>The real answer is no one knows.<\/p>\n<p>And sometimes it depends on who\u2019s on the receiving end of \u201c6-7.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even how to write \u201c6-7\u201d is up for debate \u2014 is it \u201c6 7\u201d or \u201csix seven?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Dictionary.com, the phrase could mean \u201cso-so,\u201d or \u201cmaybe this, maybe that\u201d when combined with the juggling hands gesture.<\/p>\n<p>Merriam-Webster calls it a \u201ca nonsensical expression used especially by teens and tweens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some simply use it to frustrate adults when being questioned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s meaningless, ubiquitous, and nonsensical. In other words, it has all the hallmarks of brainrot,\u201d Dictionary.com said. \u201cStill, it remains meaningful to the people who use it because of the connection it fosters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"Link\" aria-label=\"Do you speak Gen Alpha? Others suggest embracing it \u2014 even making \u201c6-7\u201d Halloween costumes \u2014 so it will become uncool.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers have banned it. Influencers and child psychologists have tried to make sense of it.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s even spilled over into the NFL as a way to celebrate big plays.<\/p>\n<p>Why is it word of the year?<\/p>\n<p>Dictionary.com says it looks for words that influence how we talk with each other and communicate online.<\/p>\n<p>The site scoured search engines, headlines and social media trends in making its choice. Online searches for \u201c6-7\u201d took off dramatically over the summer, it said, and haven\u2019t slowed, growing by six times since June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Word of the Year isn\u2019t just about popular usage; it reveals the stories we tell about ourselves and how we\u2019ve changed over the year,\u201d the site said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Go ahead and roll your eyes.
