{"id":345180,"date":"2025-10-31T08:44:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T08:44:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/345180\/"},"modified":"2025-10-31T08:44:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T08:44:15","slug":"astronomers-catch-a-ring-system-forming-around-chiron-in-real-time-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/345180\/","title":{"rendered":"Astronomers Catch a Ring System Forming Around Chiron in Real Time : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New observations of a strange object that wobbles around the space between  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-weirdest-facts-about-jupiter\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73113\" data-postid=\"178232\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Jupiter<\/a> and  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/what-is-uranus\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"101515\" data-postid=\"178232\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Uranus<\/a> reveal what looks like a system of rings forming and evolving, even as we watch.<\/p>\n<p>The object, named Chiron, is a chunk of rock shaped a bit like a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jelly_doughnut\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">jelly donut<\/a>, measuring around <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1051\/0004-6361\/202346749\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">210 kilometers (130 miles) across<\/a> at its widest point.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery that its rings are changing does nothing to dispel its reputation as one of the oddest objects in the Solar System.<\/p>\n<p>Based on data obtained as Chiron passed in front of a star in 2023, these changes might be discernible over mere years to decades, suggesting, at the very least, a wildly dynamic environment around the object.<\/p>\n<p><b>Related: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/this-strange-comet-asteroid-hybrid-is-like-nothing-else-in-the-solar-system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><b>This Strange Comet-Asteroid Hybrid Is Like Nothing Else in The Solar System<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chiron belongs to a population of objects known as the centaurs, a group of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/more-than-100-new-minor-planets-have-been-identified-out-past-neptune\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">minor planets<\/a> that orbit the Sun between Jupiter and Neptune on elliptical paths that cross the orbit of at least one of the gas or ice giants. It behaves both like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/4-powerful-telescopes-agree-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-really-is-bizarre\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">comet<\/a> and an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/earth-is-at-risk-from-invisible-asteroids-lurking-near-venus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid<\/a>, and multiple observation sets suggest that it has rings, like a mini version of the ringed planets.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/centaur_rings_642.jpg\" alt=\"asteroid rings\" width=\"642\" height=\"350\" class=\"wp-image-179602 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Other minor planets with rings include (from left) Quaoar, Haumea, and Chariklo. Interestingly, none of the Solar System&#8217;s moons have rings. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.br\/observatorio\/pt-br\/assuntos\/noticias\/astronomos-flagram-pela-primeira-vez-a-formacao-de-um-sistema-de-aneis-em-tempo-real\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Observatory<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Because Chiron is so distant and dim, it&#8217;s hard to study in detail. But every so often, it passes in front of a bright star, backlighting the space around it in an event known as an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Occultation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">occultation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s still a limit on the level of detail astronomers can obtain from an occultation, but one good thing is that it lights up the space immediately around Chiron, too.<\/p>\n<p>On 10 September 2023, a stellar occultation of Chiron took place. It lasted just a few seconds, but a total of 31 observation sites across South America cooperated to obtain images of this event with exquisite precision.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When Chiron passed in front of a distant star, its light was dimmed not only by the main body but also by multiple structures surrounding it,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.br\/observatorio\/pt-br\/assuntos\/noticias\/astronomos-flagram-pela-primeira-vez-a-formacao-de-um-sistema-de-aneis-em-tempo-real\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains astronomer Chrystian Pereira<\/a> of the National Observatory in Brazil. &#8220;So, we were able to map this system in unprecedented detail.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the dip in starlight as the body of Chiron eclipsed the distant star, the astronomers recorded three distinct signals representing rings orbiting the centaur at radii of 273, 325, and 438 kilometers.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s thought that the inner two of these rings may be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-find-dwarf-planet-with-an-impossible-ring-and-theyre-unsure-how-it-exists\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">too close to Chiron<\/a> to remain undisturbed by its gravity. In addition, the data revealed a broader, disk-like structure extending between 200 and 800 kilometers, and a newly detected faint signal at around 1,380 kilometers.<\/p>\n<p>This is quite different from <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3847\/PSJ\/ad0632\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a 2023 analysis<\/a> of the data obtained from a 2018 occultation led by astronomer Amanda Sickafoose of the Planetary Science Institute in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Both teams \u2013 Pereira&#8217;s and Sickafoose&#8217;s \u2013 believe that ongoing observations reveal significant changes constantly churning in the space around Chiron. It seems likely that the disk, for example, formed as recently as 2021, when the object underwent a <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3847\/2515-5172\/ac26c9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">period of brightening<\/a> as it ejected material, comet-style.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761900253_891_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are seeing the aftermath of a recent event,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.br\/observatorio\/pt-br\/assuntos\/noticias\/astronomos-flagram-pela-primeira-vez-a-formacao-de-um-sistema-de-aneis-em-tempo-real\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pereira&#8217;s team says<\/a>. &#8220;The material ejected by Chiron appears to be gradually settling in the object&#8217;s equatorial plane, being shaped by gravitational resonances and collisions, forming the rings we see today.
