Several local leaders, school boards and community groups have been outspoken about their thoughts on the ballot initiative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>What is Prop 50?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Governor Gavin Newsom introduced Prop 50 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/san-diego-leaders-lawmakers-respond-042746195.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:counteract;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">counteract<\/a> Texas\u2019 similar redistricting efforts. Newsom has stated the proposition also hopes to safeguard democratic practices by stopping the Trump administration from influencing the midterms or entertaining a <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5574490-trump-teases-third-term\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:third presidential term.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">third presidential term.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">If Prop 50 is passed, five new congressional seats will be created with a Democratic majority, potentially affecting incumbent members of Congress such as Republican Representative Darrel Issa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Here is a list of local Prop 50 endorsements or leaders who have publicly shared how they will be voting.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ylk=\"ct:story;elm:img;itc:0;\" class=\"stretched-box\" href=\"https:\/\/fox5sandiego.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/08\/AP25226722187672.jpg\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><img alt=\"California Gov. (AP Photo\/Marcio Jose Sanchez)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Who\u2019s voting \u201cYes\u201d on Prop 50<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Who\u2019s voting \u201cNo\u201d on Prop 50<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"mb-4\">\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Boardmember Delia Dominguez Cervantes, Chula Vista Elementary School District<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"mb-4\">\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Councilmember Christian Garcia, City of Escondido<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"mb-4\">\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">President Karen Clark Mejia City of El Cajon Valley Union School District<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Arguments for \u201cno\u201d on Prop 50<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Many leaders voting \u201cno\u201d on Prop 50 state that redistricting efforts are a political power grab by Newsom. <\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis is not about better representation, it is about consolidating power for his own political ambitions,\u201d Desmond said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jim_desmond\/status\/1956064502648332575\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:social media post;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">social media post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Groups like the\u00a0Union Tribune Editorial Board state that Prop 50 \u201cnormalizes\u201d this type of governance. <\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cNone of this will matter \u2014\u00a0 or should matter \u2014\u00a0 to those who believe Trump is a primal threat to American values,\u201d the Union Tribune Editorial Board wrote. \u201cBut it will to those who think Newsom\u2019s measure reflects a \u2018burn down the village to save it\u2019 mindset. The Union-Tribune Editorial Board recommends a no vote on Proposition 50.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Arguments for \u201cyes\u201d on Prop 50<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Local school boards, such as San Diego and Oceanside, have endorsed Prop 50 to combat decisions made by the Trump administration such as increased Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presence, cuts to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and attempts to cut federal funding for schools. <\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Unions like the UDW\/AFSCME Local 3930 state that they are supporting redistricting to combat government cuts to healthcare and other vital services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cOur hardworking members overwhelmingly support Prop 50 and are coming out en masse to kick out those in Congress who slashed Medicaid and nutrition assistance funding in order to pay for a massive tax giveaway to billionaire,\u201d UDW Executive Director Doug Moore said. These cuts will impact millions of Californians who rely on Medicaid to fund the IHSS program. Together, we\u2019re going to stand up to those in Congress who attacked those who give care and those who receive care.
