{"id":345967,"date":"2025-10-31T16:42:27","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T16:42:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/345967\/"},"modified":"2025-10-31T16:42:27","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T16:42:27","slug":"scientists-identified-a-new-blood-group-after-a-50-year-mystery-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/345967\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists Identified a New Blood Group After a 50-Year Mystery : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A pregnant woman&#8217;s blood sample taken in 1972 was mysteriously missing a surface molecule found on all other known <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/red-blood-cells-play-a-much-greater-role-in-our-immune-system-than-we-thought\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">red blood cells<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p>More than 50 years later, that strange absence finally led to researchers from the UK and Israel describing a new<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/why-do-we-have-blood-types\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> blood group system<\/a> in humans. The team published a paper on the discovery in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It represents a huge achievement, and the culmination of a long team effort, to finally establish this new blood group system and be able to offer the best care to rare, but important, patients,&#8221; hematologist Louise Tilley from the UK National Health Service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/news\/2024\/september\/blood-group.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> last year, after nearly 2 decades of personally researching this bloody quirk.<\/p>\n<p>Watch the video below for a summary of their research:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761928939_540_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>While we&#8217;re most familiar with the ABO blood group system and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rh_factor_testing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rh factor<\/a> (the plus or minus), humans actually have <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human_blood_group_systems\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">many different blood group systems<\/a> based on the wide variety of proteins and sugars that coat our blood cells.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"letter-spacing: -0.45px;\">Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-identify-new-blood-group-and-its-the-worlds-rarest?utm_source=SA_article&amp;utm_campaign=related_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scientists Identify New Blood Group, And It&#8217;s The World&#8217;s Rarest<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our bodies use these antigen molecules, amongst their other purposes, as ID markers to separate &#8216;self&#8217; from potentially harmful &#8216;not-self&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/MajorBloodTypesChart642.jpg\" alt=\"Diagram of ABO blood groups and the IgM antibodies present in each.\" width=\"642\" height=\"413\" class=\"size-full wp-image-140271\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Blood type (or blood group) is determined, in part, by the ABO blood group antigens present on red blood cells.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/antibody\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73081\" data-postid=\"179773\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Antibodies<\/a> in our blood plasma detect when a foreign antigen marker is present. (<a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/3\/32\/ABO_blood_type.svg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">InvictaHOG\/Public Domain\/Wikimedia Commons<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>If these markers do not match up when receiving a blood transfusion, this life-saving tactic can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK482202\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cause reactions or even end up being fatal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Most major blood groups were identified early in the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>Many discovered since, like the Er system <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/discovery-of-a-new-rare-blood-type-could-save-the-lives-of-future-newborns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first described in 2022<\/a>, are only found in a small number of people. This is also the case for the new blood group.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The work was difficult because the genetic cases are very rare,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/news\/2024\/september\/blood-group.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explained<\/a> Tilley.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Blood-For-Transfusion.jpg\" alt=\"Nurse holding bags of blood for transfusion\" width=\"642\" height=\"490\" class=\"size-full wp-image-179783\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Transfusion reactions can be severe. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/photos\/MAFCI3WeSwk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">baseimage\/Canva<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Previous research found more than 99.9 percent of people have the AnWj antigen that was missing from the 1972 patient&#8217;s blood. Because this antigen lives on a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MAL_(gene)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">myelin and lymphocyte protein<\/a>, the researchers named the newly described system the MAL blood group.<\/p>\n<p>When both copies of a person&#8217;s MAL gene are mutated versions, they end up with an AnWj-negative blood type, like the 1972 patient. Tilley and colleagues also identified three AnWj-negative patients without this mutation, suggesting some blood disorders can suppress the antigen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/spark-into-space-comp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Mid-Article-Promo-Astro-642x272.jpg\" alt=\"Win a $10,000 Space Coast Adventure Holiday\" width=\"642\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-177074 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;MAL is a very small protein with some interesting properties which made it difficult to identify and meant we needed to pursue multiple lines of investigation to accumulate the proof we needed to establish this blood group system,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/news\/2024\/september\/blood-group.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explained<\/a> University of the West of England cell biologist Tim Satchwell.<\/p>\n<p>To confirm the culprit gene, after decades of research, the team inserted the normal MAL gene into blood cells that were AnWj-negative. This effectively delivered the AnWj antigen to those cells.<\/p>\n<p>The MAL protein is known to play a vital role in keeping cell membranes stable and aiding in cellular transport. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1046\/j.1537-2995.1988.28388219164.x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Previous research found<\/a> that the AnWj isn&#8217;t actually present in newborns but appears soon after birth.<\/p>\n<p>All AnWj-negative patients in the study shared the same mutation.
