Entering the 2025 season, LSU<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s Garrett Nussmeier<\/a><\/strong> and Texas<\/a><\/strong>\u2018 Arch Manning<\/a><\/strong> were among the preseason favorites to not only win the Heisman Trophy<\/strong> but also potentially become the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft<\/strong>. Ten weeks later and neither is anywhere to be found on most mock drafts.<\/p>\n

In their place are a pair of Big Ten quarterbacks after Oregon<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s Dante Moore<\/a><\/strong> and Indiana<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s Fernando Mendoza<\/a><\/strong> emerged as both Heisman Trophy frontrunners and midseason leaders to be among the first quarterbacks off the board in next April\u2019s NFL Draft. In fact, ESPN<\/strong> guru Mel Kiper Jr.<\/strong> has Moore as his top overall prospect in his latest Big Board Top 25 released Thursday<\/a>, with Mendoza at No. 3 overall.<\/p>\n

Alabama<\/a><\/strong> junior QB Ty Simpson<\/a><\/strong> climbed to No. 5 on Kiper\u2019s latest Big Board<\/a>, but after that, the highest-ranked SEC quarterback in Kiper\u2019s Top 25 is South Carolina<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s LaNorris Sellers<\/a><\/strong> at No. 21. Suffice it to say, there\u2019s not a lot of love for draft-eligible SEC QBs at the moment, and at least one college football pundit is ready to pour water on the league having any draft-eligible quarterbacks worthy of a Top 10 pick.<\/p>\n

During a Friday appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, former Ohio State<\/a><\/strong> coach-turned-FOX Sports analyst Urban Meyer<\/a><\/strong> cited a recent conversation with former ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay<\/strong> to dunk on the SEC\u2019s current quarterback class.<\/p>\n

\u201cTodd McShay is a guy that I respect, as well as GMs, his opinions. Those quarterbacks in the SEC, I\u2019m not sure \u2013 and neither is Todd \u2013 are those the first-round (type of) guys that you take and say, \u2018You\u2019re my quarterback and I\u2019m going to rest my career on it,\u2019\u201d Meyer told Cowherd, who immediately reinforced Meyer\u2019s sentiment. \u201cI agreed with Todd (when) he said most of those guys should get one more year (in college) before going to the NFL.\u201d<\/p>\n

That particular advice might not work for Nussmeier and other senior QBs such as Tennessee<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s Joey Aguilar<\/a><\/strong>, Arkansas<\/a><\/strong>\u2018 Taylen Green<\/a><\/strong> and Vanderbilt<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s Diego Pavia<\/a><\/strong>, but for others, it might already be a foregone conclusion. Manning, who has struggled in his first season as Texas\u2019 starter, has long been expected to return for another season in Austin. Meanwhile, for junior QBs like Simpson, Oklahoma<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s John Mateer<\/a><\/strong> and Georgia<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s Gunner Stockton<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 who are all also in their first seasons as their team\u2019s QB1 \u2014 another year in college might prove quite beneficial to their future NFL career.<\/p>\n
