{"id":346683,"date":"2025-10-31T23:40:18","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T23:40:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/346683\/"},"modified":"2025-10-31T23:40:18","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T23:40:18","slug":"ny-republicans-make-another-bid-to-stop-hochul-dems-from-moving-local-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/346683\/","title":{"rendered":"NY Republicans make another bid to stop Hochul, Dems from moving local elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ALBANY \u2013\u00a0New York Republicans are making a last-ditch bid to stop Democrats from moving most local elections outside New York City to even years, when voters turn out en masse to pick the president.<\/p>\n<p>The State Republican Committee, along with GOP representatives and party committees from Nassau, Suffolk and Orange Counties, sued <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/30\/us-news\/hochuls-ny-budget-bailed-out-by-nearly-3b-in-extra-tax-revenue-but-massive-deficits-loom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gov. Kathy Hochul<\/a> in federal court in another attempt to undo the 2023 law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/13\/us-news\/long-island-pols-blast-nys-new-election-law-that-could-boost-democrats-in-local-races\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Even-Year Election Law<\/a> is unconstitutional and undemocratic,\u201d said William Brewer III, lead counsel for the plaintiffs.<\/p>\n<p>New York Republicans are making one last effort to prevent state Democrats from moving most local elections outside New York City to even years. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an attempt to drown local voices, burden political speech, and erode the connection between voters and their local governments,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit claims the state law that mandates shifting local races to even years violates the First Amendment and the Voting Rights Act.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats pushed through the measure in the state Legislature ostensibly to boost voter turnout, since presidential and congressional elections typically see more people come out to the polls than odd-year local races.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy coupling local elections to federal and statewide ballots, the [even year election law] systematically converts local races into low-information, partisan contests,\u201d states the suit, filed Thursday in the Eastern District of New York.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoters default to party heuristics and identity prejudices, rather than candidate speech. This erases the \u2018town square\u2019 the First Amendment was designed to protect,\u201d it states.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>New York\u2019s highest court <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/16\/us-news\/dem-scheme-to-move-elections-outside-nyc-to-even-years-upheld-by-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smacked down<\/a> an effort by the counties to toss out the law last month in a unanimous decision written by Judge Michael Garcia, a Republican, prompting the federal suit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKathy Hochul and power-mad Democrats want to move local elections to even years to consolidate their control of government,\u201d David Laska, a spokesperson for the state GOP, told The Post Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepublicans will pursue every avenue to give local issues the attention they deserve \u2013 because the government that governs closest to the people governs best,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The State Republican Committee has sued Gov. Kathy Hochul in federal court to repeal the 2023 law. Matthew McDermott<\/p>\n<p>Emma Wallner, a spokesperson for Hochul, said the Democratic governor \u201ccontinues to champion New York\u2019s even-year election legislation because she believes our state is stronger when more people have the opportunity to participate in government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe won in court once, and we\u2019ll do it again,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>If the latest effort fails, the 2027 would be the first off cycle year without most local elections up for a vote.<\/p>\n<p>William Brewer III, lead counsel for the plaintiffs, said, \u201cThe Even-Year Election Law is unconstitutional and undemocratic.\u201d Paul Martinka<\/p>\n<p>The state law does not apply to New York City, but voters face a similar question on their ballots during the Nov. 4 election, asking them whether local elections should be moved to coincide with presidential years.<\/p>\n<p>The concept is coming as a shock to even some of the Big Apple\u2019s most notable lefty denizens.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI honestly don\u2019t understand why [New York City Mayor Eric Adams] wants to change when New Yorkers vote,\u201d former Mayor Bill de Blasio squealed on X, Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI fear that moving to even-number years will take attention away from local issues and will advantage candidates with wealth or fame.
