{"id":347179,"date":"2025-11-01T04:37:28","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T04:37:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/347179\/"},"modified":"2025-11-01T04:37:28","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T04:37:28","slug":"coalition-estimates-they-can-save-phoenix-3-billion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/347179\/","title":{"rendered":"Coalition estimates they can save Phoenix $3 billion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PHOENIX \u2014 The Smart Surfaces Coalition says they can save the city of Phoenix $3 billion over 35 years with the implementation of trees, reflective roofs, road resurfacing and green stormwater infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Savings would be spread out in the form of public health benefits, energy savings and infrastructure savings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a desert community, building resilience to extreme heat is a top priority,\u201d Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said in a release. \u201cWe will continue to innovate to make our neighborhoods cooler and more comfortable, including implementing \u2018smart\u2019 surfaces and building materials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city partnered with the coalition to develop the \u201cShade Phoenix Plan\u201d to provide more than 27,000 new trees and 500 new shade structures to Phoenix last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Cities for Smart Surfaces Program is a great partner for Phoenix as we tackle the challenges posed by extreme heat,\u201d Phoenix\u2019s Director of Heat Response and Mitigation David Hondula said.<\/p>\n<p>Among the resources the Smart Surfaces Coalition used to calculate its figures are a benefit-cost analysis tool, decision support tool and <a href=\"https:\/\/smartsurfacespolicy.org\/policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">policy tracker<\/a> developed by the coalition and partners like the World Resources Institute, Altostratus Inc., Open Technologies, Trust for Public Land and Columbia University\u2019s Sabin Center for Climate Change Law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCities have never before had such a comprehensive, data-rich view of their surface infrastructure \u2013 or such clear guidance on where and how to act,\u201d CEO &amp; Founder of the Smart Surfaces Coalition Greg Kats said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the coalition, adopting smart surfaces could reduce air temperatures by 4.6 degrees in some neighborhoods and help store billions of gallons of rain water.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"twitter-follow-button\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomkuebelaz\" data-show-count=\"false\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Follow @tomkuebelaz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We want to hear from you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Have a story idea or tip?
