JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 Each year, Halloween is go time for the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office\u2019s sex offender tracking unit.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe week of Halloween, they always go out and they make contact with about 2,500 of them. That\u2019s what they\u2019re trying to do,\u201d Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office spokesperson Christian Hancock said on Thursday. \u201cThey\u2019re going to try and make contact with them just to ensure that they\u2019re in compliance.\u201d<\/p>\n
Under state law, registered sex offenders cannot:<\/p>\n
>>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <\/b><\/a><\/p>\n [DOWNLOAD: <\/b>Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks<\/b><\/a>]<\/b><\/p>\n While JSO will be patrolling Halloween night for those not in compliance, the agency also said it\u2019s important for parents to check the state\u2019s sex offender registry and know where offenders are in their neighborhoods.<\/p>\n \u201cWe would urge parents to go to the website, find out where they are, locate them on your map, and show your children where they need not go,\u201d Hancock outlined.<\/p>\n However, the risk goes all the way from the doorstep to the roadway for trick-or-treaters, with several Duval County Public School students hit by cars already to start off this school year.<\/p>\n [SIGN UP: <\/b>Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter<\/b><\/a>] <\/b><\/p>\n \u201cBright, shiny costumes are phenomenal, right? They reflect light, they\u2019re able to be seen a lot more, but unfortunately, there are some darker costumes,\u201d Hancock reminded. \u201cThey\u2019re black, they are a darker color, they are harder to see. Understand that, let your children know that.\u201d<\/p>\n Now, JSO is calling on both drivers and parents to do their part in making sure kids are safe and seen this Halloween.<\/p>\n \u201cAs a parent, tell your children about this.
