(Chicago Tribune historical photo)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1942:<\/strong> With men serving in the armed forces during World War II, Lincoln Park Zoo offered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-lincoln-park-animals-joi\/163272662\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cthe same pay and the same privileges as men\u201d for women<\/a> looking for jobs for up to 100 jobs offered through the Chicago Park District. Women \u2014 who requested work as truck drivers, garage attendants, tractor operators and laborers \u2014 applied for these positions through the Park District, many listing \u201clong experience in the care of dogs, cats, and birds\u201d as qualifications.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"John H. Johnson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMuch like Bibles have been a mainstay in hotels and motels across America, so was Ebony magazine when it came to Black homes and businesses,\u201d Tribune reporter Darcel Rockett wrote in 2020. \u201cIf you\u2019re of a certain age, the Chicago-based publication was just a constant. One never questioned its presence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The monthly publication \u2014 focused like Life magazine on showing American lives \u2014 chronicled the achievements of those in the Black community. The 25,000-copy press run of the inaugural 52-page issue sold out. By its 10th year, the magazine was being read by 500,000 people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1987:<\/strong> The Chicago Religious Task Force, a national clearinghouse for the sanctuary movement helping Central American refugees, said in a Tribune story that it was planning to urge priests, nuns and \u201cemployers to <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-religious-group-urges-em\/163816821\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">break the law by hiring undocumented workers<\/a>\u201d in the Chicago area, where tens of thousands of the immigrants lived.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ayTaDVVM6U\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/03\/05\/timeline-chicagos-more-than-40-year-history-as-a-sanctuary-city\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago\u2019s more than 40-year history as a sanctuary city<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Michael Jordan's No. 23 jersey was retired by the Chicago Bulls on Nov. 1, 1994, at the United Center. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1994:<\/strong> Michael Jordan\u2019s No. 23 jersey <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-no-23-flies-to-the-raft\/164616847\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ascended to the rafters<\/a> in the United Center \u2014 though it got momentarily stuck halfway up. A bronze statue of him was also revealed outside the building, but it has since been moved inside the arena.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999:<\/strong> Chicago Bears Hall of Famer <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-sweetness-dies-chicag\/184044757\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Walter Payton<\/a> died of bile duct cancer and liver failure at age 45.<\/p>\n<p class=\"quote\">\u201cThe last 12 months have been extremely tough on me and my family. \u2026 Our greatest thanks goes out to the people of Chicago. You adopted my dad and made him yours.
