{"id":347936,"date":"2025-11-01T12:16:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T12:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/347936\/"},"modified":"2025-11-01T12:16:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T12:16:12","slug":"new-mural-in-philadelphias-germantown-honors-frances-harper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/347936\/","title":{"rendered":"New mural in Philadelphia\u2019s Germantown honors Frances Harper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>When artist <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/episodes\/schooled-on-philly-arts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Athena Scott<\/a> got a job with Mural Arts Philadelphia to design a mural in honor of Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, she had never heard of the 19th-century suffragist and abolitionist.\n<\/p>\n<p>Scott relied heavily on the resources of the Penn State University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/digblk.psu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Black Digital Research<\/a>, where she learned Harper was the first Black woman to tour the country as a paid anti-slavery speaker. (Kimberly Paynter\/WHYY)<\/p>\n<p>Scott placed Harper in the center of the mural on the Greene Street Friends School building at Armat and Greene streets in Germantown. But she is not alone.\n<\/p>\n<p>Surrounding Harper are portraits of other prominent Black women of the same era:\u00a0 Nannie Helen Burroughs, who started a school for Black girls in Washington, D.C.; Mary Ann Shadd Cary, the first Black woman to publish a newspaper; Harriet Forten Purvis, founder of the Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society; and her niece Charlotte Forten Grimk\u00e9, a teacher who educated formerly enslaved people newly freed after the Civil War.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-721076\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/10-30-2025-k-paynter-1200x-sz-francis-harper-mural-3-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Athena Scott speaks to crowd\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"  \/>Mural artist Athena Scott designed the We Are All Bound Up Together mural on the wall of the Greene Street Friends School in Philadelphia\u2019s Germantown neighborhood. (Kimberly Paynter\/WHYY)\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is part of a collective of Black women,\u201d said Gabrielle Foreman, co-founder and co-director of the Center for Black Digital Research, of Harper.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are women from Philadelphia who were holding down that activist, organizational and democratic commitment to making this country what it can be at a moment where it had not yet gotten there,\u201d she said.\n<\/p>\n<p>This year is the bicentennial of Harper\u2019s birth. (Kimberly Paynter\/WHYY)\n<\/p>\n<p>One of the phrases for which Harper is most recognized comes from a speech she gave at the National Women\u2019s Rights Convention in 1866, in which she exclaimed the urgent need for the right to vote, while also warning that Black women need more than suffrage to live freely and equally.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all bound up together in one great bundle of humanity,\u201d Harper said <a href=\"https:\/\/constitutioncenter.org\/the-constitution\/historic-document-library\/detail\/frances-ellen-watkins-harper-we-are-all-bound-up-together-1866\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in her convention speech<\/a>. \u201cSociety cannot trample on the weakest and feeblest of its members without receiving a curse in its own soul.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>The excerpt is included on the outdoor mural.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is committing to reconciliation, to love, to leading with empathy as a core of democracy,\u201d Foreman said. \u201cWhy do we not know her name like Sojourner Truth?
