The 27-year-old Belarusian cruised to another win in straight sets on Wednesday over Marie Bouzkova to advance to the third round.<\/p>\n<p>Though Wimbledon has not been her strongest Grand Slam in the past \u2014 Sabalenka has made the semifinals twice in her career, but has not advanced to the final \u2014 a wide-open field leaves plenty of room for Sabalenka to take her first Wimbledon title.<\/p>\n<p>Gauff&#8217;s loss, while a stark contrast to her <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/tennis\/live\/french-open-womens-final-coco-gauff-outlasts-aryna-sabalenka-to-win-first-title-at-roland-garros-120018916.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:French Open win last month;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French Open win last month<\/a>, was not entirely unexpected: Grass is easily Gauff&#8217;s weakest surface, and the American has never advanced past the fourth round of Wimbledon. Similarly, Zheng exits Wimbledon in the first round for the third straight year; Pegula, who advanced to the quarterfinals once, also tends to fare better on hard surfaces.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Paolini is a bit of an anomaly: The 29-year-old <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/live\/wimbledon-womens-final-live-updates-jasmine-paolini-barbora-krejcikova-score-how-to-watch-123027434.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:made the Wimbledon final;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made the Wimbledon final<\/a> last year in a similarly wide-open tournament before losing to Barbora Krej\u010d\u00edkov\u00e1. But prior to that, Paolini had never made it past the second round. (The 2024 Wimbledon tournament was a particularly odd one as well: Other than Paolini, only two other players in the top 15 seeds made it past round four; the champion, Krej\u010d\u00edkov\u00e1, was the 31st seed.)<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, it caps off a strange start to the 2025 contest, as 23 seeded players fell in the first two days \u2014 a record-tying number.
