{"id":348293,"date":"2025-11-01T15:58:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T15:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/348293\/"},"modified":"2025-11-01T15:58:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T15:58:12","slug":"canadian-prime-minister-says-he-told-ontarios-premier-not-to-run-anti-tariff-ad-that-upset-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/348293\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian prime minister says he told Ontario&#8217;s premier not to run anti-tariff ad that upset Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO (AP) \u2014 Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he told Ontario\u2019s premier not to run an anti-tariff advertisement that prompted U.S. President Donald Trump to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-us-canada-tariffs-timeline-470fe71d7e6071f44f1607ca24f0d966\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">end trade talks<\/a> with Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Carney also confirmed that he apologized to the president during a dinner at the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-korea-trump-xi-apec-tariffs-gyeongju-2f757a6ea64284fb6bf792aba8b214fb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit<\/a> because Trump was \u201coffended.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Ontario\u2019s television advertisement that aired in in the U.S. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-trump-tariffs-reagan-tariffs-e0e6a8f1fa49f00c9e8d08df405ee299\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">criticizes Trump\u2019s tariffs<\/a> by citing a speech from former U.S. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/ronald-reagan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Ronald Reagan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The ad infuriated Trump, who ended trade talks with Canada and said he plans to hike tariffs on imports of Canadian goods by an extra 10%. <\/p>\n<p>When asked on Saturday what Ontario Premier Doug Ford\u2019s response was to being asked not to run the ad, Carney said, \u201cWell, you saw what came of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not something I would have done,\u201d Carney added at a news conference as he wrapped a nine-day trip to Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Ford is a populist Conservative while Carney is a Liberal. As premier, Ford is the equivalent of a U.S. governor. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m the one who is responsible, in my role as prime minister, for the relationship with the president of the U.S., and the federal government is responsible for the foreign relationship with the U.S. government,\u201d Carney said. <\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Ford didn\u2019t immediately respond when asked if Carney told Ford not to run the ad.<\/p>\n<p>Ford previously said Carney and Carney\u2019s chief of staff watched the ad before it was released.<\/p>\n<p>Ford pulled the ad last Monday but allowed it to be shown in the first two games of the baseball World Series. <\/p>\n<p>Trump said the ad misrepresented the position of Reagan, a two-term president and a beloved figure in the Republican Party. But Reagan was wary of tariffs and used much of the 1987 address featured in Ontario\u2019s ad spelling out the case against them. <\/p>\n<p>Trump has complained the ad was aimed at influencing the U.S. Supreme Court ahead of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-supreme-court-d1d0dd6ddd83e2c1df1598e468b839f5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arguments scheduled<\/a> this month that could decide whether Trump has the power to impose his sweeping tariffs, a key part of his economic strategy. Lower courts had ruled he had exceeded his authority.<\/p>\n<p>Carney met with Trump at the White House last month and has been trying to secure <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-trump-carney-white-house-59b735b719247c7063777c1edcb10328\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a trade deal<\/a> to lower some tariffs on sectors like steel and aluminum.
