Here, she shares how the exercise has helped her rebuild her relationship with her body.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">This time two years ago, I couldn\u2019t sleep. I couldn\u2019t shower and I couldn\u2019t pull up my trousers. At least not without excruciating pain. Since tearing my right rotator cuff \u2013 the group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint \u2013 in 2021, while throwing a ball for my daughter\u2019s dog, I\u2019d been a shell of myself. That the simple act of picking up a coffee could leave me crying out in pain made it easier to stay home \u2013 so I often did. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">It hadn\u2019t always been this way. Before the injury, I was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a40743707\/weight-lifting-for-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a40743707\/weight-lifting-for-women\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"lifting light weights\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lifting light weights<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a705924\/best-gyms-in-london\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a705924\/best-gyms-in-london\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"gym\" data-node-id=\"4.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">gym<\/a> five or six times a week \u2013 a routine I\u2019d maintained for three decades. It meant that, after the injury, I couldn\u2019t wait to move my body again. And after a month of rest \u2013 on doctor\u2019s orders \u2013 I couldn\u2019t wait to start doing my daily physio. In the end, one was all it took to convince me that I\u2019d found the thing that would make me feel better. After a year of going twice a week, my pain had gone from being unbearable to being barely a one out of ten. Two years in, I feel 30 years younger \u2013 and I credit my recovery completely with classical reformer Pilates. That doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s always been easy. I\u2019ve also introduced 30 minutes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a706202\/strength-training-for-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a706202\/strength-training-for-beginners\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength training\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strength training<\/a> every morning, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a708464\/how-to-squat-properly\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a708464\/how-to-squat-properly\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"squats\" data-node-id=\"13.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">squats<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/g64051880\/lower-ab-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/g64051880\/lower-ab-exercise\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"sit ups\" data-node-id=\"13.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sit ups<\/a>, and a one-minute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a39660442\/plank-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a39660442\/plank-challenge\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"plank\" data-node-id=\"13.7\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">plank<\/a> and I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/walking\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/walking\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"walk\" data-node-id=\"13.9\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">walk<\/a> a minimum of 6,500 steps a day. I\u2019m grateful I can lift weights and walk with ease again, but it\u2019s the little things I don\u2019t take for granted anymore: I can put on my own shoes, dress myself, and enjoy life without pain. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">After five years, I\u2019m expecting to come off my blood pressure medication soon, as it has significantly lowered. It means, at 72, the only \u2018tablets\u2019 I take are a magnesium and vitamin D supplement. A balanced diet helps \u2013 breakfast might be yoghurt and fruit; lunch a protein shake; dinner fish, rice and vegetables \u2013 but Pilates has given me benefits beyond relieving my pain and strengthening my muscles. I\u2019ll do it as long as I live.   <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"body-tip css-18qyn7q emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"16.0\">My favourite Pilates exercise: <\/strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a65121182\/pilates-core-exercise-hundred\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a65121182\/pilates-core-exercise-hundred\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"hundred\" data-node-id=\"16.2\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hundred<\/a>. I never believed I&#8217;d be able to do it.<br data-node-id=\"16.4\"\/><strong data-node-id=\"16.5\">My top Pilates advice: <\/strong>At \u00a320-\u00a330 a session, classes are an investment \u2013 but it&#8217;s the best money I&#8217;ve ever spent. <br data-node-id=\"16.7\"\/><strong data-node-id=\"16.8\">Rest day ritual:<\/strong> Meeting up with my walking group.
