{"id":348732,"date":"2025-11-01T20:19:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T20:19:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/348732\/"},"modified":"2025-11-01T20:19:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T20:19:15","slug":"cuomo-gets-support-from-across-the-aisle-but-still-trails-mamdani-in-nyc-mayors-race-polls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/348732\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuomo gets support from across the aisle, but still trails Mamdani in NYC mayor&#8217;s race polls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the last few days of the New York City mayoral race, independent candidate Andrew Cuomo has picked up support from prominent political figures, including former\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/michael-bloomberg-andrew-cuomo-endorsement-nyc-mayors-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mayor Mike Bloomberg<\/a>, New York\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/zohran-mamdani-united-bodegas-of-america-endorsement\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rep. Tom Suozzi<\/a> and former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nyc-mayor-election-david-paterson-endorses-andrew-cuomo\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gov. David Paterson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Though some of the most notable support has come from across the aisle, as Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy, who was once critical of the former governor, is now backing him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No one was a fiercer critic&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with CBS News on Friday, Langworthy, the New York State representative and former state GOP chairman, said of Cuomo that &#8220;no one was a fiercer critic of his time as governor than I was.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, when then Governor Cuomo closed several correctional facilities, citing a drop in the state&#8217;s inmate population because of criminal justice reforms, Langworthy attacked, &#8220;Andrew Cuomo deserves an Emmy after all\u2013for his real-life portrayal of Ebeneezer Scrooge, but unlike Scrooge, there is no redemption for his destruction of New Yorkers&#8217; lives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ap25003779026260.jpg#.jpeg\" alt=\"Congress \" height=\"413\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                  House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., left, poses during a ceremonial swearing-in with Rep. Mike Lawler, who also has been critical of Cuomo, got behind him this week in an interview on WABC radio, saying, &#8220;I don&#8217;t like Andrew Cuomo. I have been very clear about my problems with Andrew Cuomo,&#8221; but indicated he is the best option among the candidates.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We fought him tooth and nail every step of the way,&#8221; Langworthy told CBS News. &#8220;But he would be a far superior choice for the people of New York than Zohran Mamdami.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Republican concern about Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani<\/p>\n<p>Langworthy, along with others in the Republican Party, voiced concern about Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani&#8217;s ties to the Democratic Socialists of America, citing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nyc-mayoral-candidates-running-2025-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">his proposed policies<\/a> that would provide free buses, freeze rent on rent-stabilized units, and increase taxes on wealthy New Yorkers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>President Trump has frequently called Mamdani a &#8220;communist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These ideas will take our city and state backward,&#8221; said Langworthy, adding that some Republicans like the idea of Mamdani winning, &#8220;because they think he&#8217;ll do a poor job and he&#8217;ll be the new face of the Democratic Party.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Langworthy also expressed concern about the implications he says Mamdani&#8217;s victory would have across the country, saying, Mamdani&#8217;s policies would become &#8220;contagious around the country if he has a platform to talk to vast sums of people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ap25289860814500.jpg#.jpeg\" alt=\"Election 2025 New York Mayor \" height=\"414\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                  Independent candidate former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, left, speaks during a mayoral debate with Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, center, and Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani, Thursday, Oct. 16, 2025, in New York.<\/p>\n<p>                Angelina Katsanis \/ AP<\/p>\n<p>When asked why Langworthy isn&#8217;t backing Curtis Sliwa, the Republican nominee, he challenged Sliwa&#8217;s likelihood of winning based on polling data and questioned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/curtis-sliwa-wabc-radio\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">his motives for staying in the race<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Are you in this for a vanity run, for, for self-promotion, or do you want what&#8217;s best for the city?&#8221; Langworthy asked rhetorically of Sliwa.<\/p>\n<p>Spokespeople for both Sliwa&#8217;s and Mamdani&#8217;s campaigns did not immediately respond to a request for a comment on Langworthy&#8217;s endorsement.<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo and Sliwa trail Mamdani in polls<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/poll-release?releaseid=3940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recent poll<\/a> from Quinnipiac University shows that Mamdani leads Cuomo 43 percent to 33 percent, with Sliwa in third at 14 percent support.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani recently received an endorsement from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/jeffries-mamdani-endorsement-nyc-mayor-election-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries<\/a>, but told Jon Stewart in an interview on &#8220;The Daily Show&#8221;
