More than 100,000 people voted early on Saturday, the biggest day of the early voting period.<\/p>\n<p>Inside a Queens grocery store, independent candidate Andrew Cuomo was joined by incumbent Mayor Eric Adams. While the two fought bitterly during much of the campaign, Adams has now become one of Cuomo\u2019s most vocal supporters, as he tries to defeat Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani and Republican Nominee Curtis Sliwa.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a new poll showing Mamdani with a <a href=\"https:\/\/emersoncollegepolling.com\/new-york-city-mayor-and-new-jersey-governor-2025\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/emersoncollegepolling.com\/new-york-city-mayor-and-new-jersey-governor-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two-to-one lead over Cuomo<\/a>, a former Governor of New York who resigned in 2021, he is making a case that he is catching up to the front-runner.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s coming down.\u00a0I\u2019m going up.\u00a0That\u2019s always good,\u201d Cuomo said.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani, an Astoria, Queens state Assembly Member who\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/news\/politics\/nyc-mayor-polls-latest-mamdani-sliwa\/6411533\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/news\/politics\/nyc-mayor-polls-latest-mamdani-sliwa\/6411533\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">led every poll since the primary<\/a>, has a different view. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s momentum of young voters, of older voters. A momentum of New Yorkers who are hungry for change,\u201d Mamdani told News 4.<\/p>\n<p>Sliwa is also projecting optimism, as the new Emerson poll shows the Guardian Angels founder in a virtual tie with Cuomo for second place.\u00a0\u201cWe can turn Queens red!\u201d Sliwa told voters.<\/p>\n<p>The upbeat tone by each contender comes as New Yorkers flock to the polls in an early voting surge &#8212; about five times higher than the last mayoral election.<\/p>\n<p>Voters tell News 4 that they\u2019re worried about the economy.\u00a0\u201cPeople are tired of living paycheck to paycheck and not having a voice and having people that are not advocating in our interests,\u201d said Blanche Hatwood of Jamaica, Queens.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re also concerned with public safety.\u00a0\u201cYou have to have the cops because the streets are a mess,\u201d said Carl James of Tremont, The Bronx.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo has called for hiring 5,000 new officers \u2013 an idea Adams offered this week, though it would not start until after he leaves office.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani appeared in Harlem Saturday with the Rev. Al Sharpton of the National Action Network.\u00a0\u201cI bring you the candidate that showed up,\u201d Sharpton told the audience of Mamdani.\u00a0He has been critical of Cuomo\u2019s tone in the closing weeks of the campaign, and warned candidates: \u201cIf you can\u2019t get a vote on your record, don\u2019t play us against each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the Mayor raced to Cuomo\u2019s defense.\u00a0\u201cThis is not negative.\u00a0It is revealing the facts,\u201d Adams said.<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo insists that it\u2019s Mamdani who\u2019s gone negative in his campaigning. \u201cPointing out that he has been offensive doesn\u2019t make me the offender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo is trying to make the case that that he is the trusted pro who\u2019ll make the city safer, while Mamdani is a socialist who\u2019s too inexperienced to govern.\u00a0And Sliwa, Cuomo believes, is a spoiler. \u201cI think they realize he is dangerously unqualified,\u201d Cuomo added.<\/p>\n<p>Sliwa countered that \u201cThe whole campaign now is fear, fright, and hysteria. And \u2018Don\u2019t vote for Sliwa, vote for me.\u2019 Alright.
