{"id":34960,"date":"2025-07-03T09:39:08","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T09:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/34960\/"},"modified":"2025-07-03T09:39:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T09:39:08","slug":"fabio-fogninis-wife-responds-to-carlos-alcarazs-comments-about-her-husband-after-their-wimbledon-match","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/34960\/","title":{"rendered":"Fabio Fognini&#8217;s wife responds to Carlos Alcaraz&#8217;s comments about her husband after their Wimbledon match"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Fabio Fognini nearly caused an all-time great Wimbledon upset in the first round against Carlos Alcaraz.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Italian hadn\u2019t won an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/atp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ATP Tour<\/a> main draw match in nine months when he stepped foot onto Centre Court, taking on the defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.<\/p>\n<p>Many were predicting an easy win for the world number two, although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/fabio-fognini\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fognini<\/a> had other ideas as he pushed Alcaraz all the way. <\/p>\n<p>Eventually, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/carlos-alcaraz-and-fabio-fognini-exchange-messages-on-social-media-after-their-wimbledon-battle-on-centre-court\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fognini lost to Alcaraz<\/a> in five sets 5-7, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2, 1-6, as he waved goodbye to the fans at SW19 one final time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/GettyImages-2222937485-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Fabio Fognini waves goodbye to the crowd after losing to Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon in 2025\" class=\"wp-image-106766\" \/>Photo by Julian Finney\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Despite his impending retirement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/carlos-alcaraz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alcaraz<\/a> claimed 38-year-old Fognini could play tennis until he was 50 after the match.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to those comments, Fognini\u2019s wife, Flavia Pennetta, has shared what she told her husband recently.<\/p>\n<p>Flavia Pennetta told Fabio Fognini \u2018don\u2019t try it\u2019 after Carlos Alcaraz said he could play until he\u2019s 50<\/p>\n<p>During an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gazzetta.it\/Tennis\/atp\/slam\/wimbledon\/02-07-2025\/flavia-pennetta-su-fognini-lui-alcaraz-wimbledon-il-ritiro-e.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">La Gazzetta dello Sport<\/a>, Pennetta revealed what she said to Fognini in reaction to Alcaraz\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him: don\u2019t try it, I scolded him. Which then puts strange ideas in his head,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Fognini announced his intention to retire in 2025, although the exact date wasn\u2019t clear.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"699\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/GettyImages-1481970185-1024x699.jpg\" alt=\"Flavia Pennetta and Fabio Fognini watching on at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters\" class=\"wp-image-107475\" \/>Photo by Clive Brunskill\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>After losing to Alcaraz, Fognini hinted that he may have played his final match, during his press conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this is probably [the] best way to say [goodbye] to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/wimbledon\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wimbledon<\/a>, and maybe for the tennis,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about Fognini\u2019s future, Pennetta claimed her husband \u2018already knows\u2019 what he\u2019s going to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll also go on holiday, all five of us, where he\u2019ll take the opportunity to reflect, away from the courts,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think he already knows that deep down. It\u2019s always difficult to move from thought to action when it comes to ending a career that\u2019s been with you your whole life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he\u2019s satisfied that he\u2019s made his decision. I\u2019ll support him, no matter what his choices are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pennetta announced her retirement from tennis after the biggest win of her career, when she took home the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/us-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Open<\/a> title in 2015.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>When asked if she remembers her retirement, Pennetta explained how she was satisfied with her career when she decided to call it quits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course I remember. I was satisfied, content. I was at peace with that trophy in my hand, and it came naturally to me to say enough,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/novak-djokovic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">[Novak] Djokovic<\/a>, for example, is so competitive that he would never stop, after a joy like that of the Olympic victory, which Nole has chased throughout his career, I would have said enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pennetta continued, giving her verdict on Fognini\u2019s next steps, whether that be in punditry or coaching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would definitely see him as a talent, because he understands the game, he knows how to explain it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is not afraid to say things as they are, to give his impartial opinion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has a great eye. He can immediately understand if a young person has talent.
