{"id":349613,"date":"2025-11-02T05:03:20","date_gmt":"2025-11-02T05:03:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/349613\/"},"modified":"2025-11-02T05:03:20","modified_gmt":"2025-11-02T05:03:20","slug":"family-says-houston-man-found-burning-under-freeway-was-murdered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/349613\/","title":{"rendered":"Family says Houston man found burning under freeway was murdered"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>HOUSTON<\/strong> \u2013 A gruesome discovery under a Houston freeway has left a family searching for answers after a man was found hanging and on fire, in what police are investigating as a potential homicide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Railroad workers discovered the burning body of 46-year-old Jeremy Carnes hanging beneath the I-610 Freeway, near 5000 Kirkpatrick Boulevard in northeast Houston, on October 23. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Union Pacific workers initially reported it as a brush fire to the Houston Fire Department around 10 p.m., according to Houston Police. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cUpon arrival, officers found a body of an adult male hanging from under the underpass. It also appears that it\u2019s been burnt, so set on fire, partially,\u201d said Lt. Kahn of the Houston Police Department at the scene.<\/p>\n<p><b>Family Rejects Possibility of Suicide<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Carnes\u2019 sister, Commilla Kidd, speaking from her home in Kansas, adamantly rejects any suggestion that her brother\u2019s death could have been self-inflicted, citing a traumatic childhood incident that left him with a lifelong fear of fire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWhen he was three years old, he was burned badly. He\u2019s got face scars, the whole deal. My brother hated fire. Like it was a fear after that,\u201d said Kidd. \u201cFor anybody to say that he did this to himself, our family\u2019s going, you don\u2019t know him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>A Life Cut Short<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Carnes, who would have turned 47 on October 30, was described by his sister as someone who could instantly connect with others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cHe was just a really nice person. He could make friends with anybody. He just was kind,\u201d Kidd recalled of her \u201cbaby brother,\u201d whom she had raised for most of his life.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\"\/><\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A native of Alvin, Texas, Carnes had been living in the Houston area, doing odd jobs and helping people in the neighborhood. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWhen he was home, he was present and loving and the kid\u2019s best friend. He was just amazing with the kids,\u201d Kidd said.<\/p>\n<p><b>A Search For Answers Continues<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Police are treating the case as a likely homicide. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt seems very unlikely [to be suicide], especially because if he\u2019s not just hanging, there\u2019s also the fire,\u201d Lt. Kahn explained. \u201cWe don\u2019t know what actually killed him. That\u2019ll be something that detectives and the ME [medical examiner], after the autopsy report comes out, they\u2019ll be able to tell officially as to the cause of death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The scene was discovered near what appears to be a homeless encampment, according to police. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Investigators have yet to identify any witnesses to the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In a small victory for the family, Carnes\u2019 dog was recently recovered and will be reunited with his daughter. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">However, Kidd remains focused on finding those responsible for her brother\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI\u2019m not done and I won\u2019t stop until I\u2019m buried six feet under.
