Dozens of wedding guests rushed to shelter children under tables and hold up the walls of a reception hall during an intense storm in Queensland’s Banana Shire over the weekend.<\/p>\n

Jordan Baxter was one of several men who fought to push up the walls of the shed at Camboon, near Theodore, on Saturday as guests took cover below.<\/p>\n

“Some of the other boys were trying to board up the windows. Tables were getting shot like ping-pong balls,” Mr Baxter told the ABC.<\/p>\n

“Next thing we know, the roof is just gone.”<\/p>\n

Mr Baxter said there was a moment of panic when one of the children was thought to be missing, but they were later found safe with an adult who was caring for them.<\/p>\n

“It was definitely scary,” he said. “[The storm] scared the shit out of me.”<\/p>\n

Mr Baxter’s partner, Caitlin Nix, huddled under a table with the pair’s young daughters before they could eventually move into the cool room.<\/p>\n

“All of the parents were pushing the kids [under the tables],” she said. “The kids said it was a scary wedding.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

About 100 wedding guests were caught up in the chaotic conditions, which Ms Nix said appeared to come out of nowhere.<\/p>\n

“In a matter of minutes, it went from drizzly to bucketing down, painful rain,” she said.<\/p>\n

Power went out as powerful winds and rain thrashed the hall, leading to the eventual collapse of the roof.<\/p>\n

Another guest, Bree Bulger, was lucky to get out early in her car.<\/p>\n

“That’s the worst storm I’ve seen in years,” she said.<\/p>\n

“There were trees down everywhere on the road, and we cleared most of them off so we could get out and emergency crews could get in.”<\/p>\n

Ms Nix said the groom \u2014 Mr Baxter’s stepbrother \u2014 was “pretty shaken up” in the aftermath of the wild weather, but did a great job “keeping everyone calm”.<\/p>\n

“I’m just thankful we got out OK, and everyone was alright,” she said.<\/p>\n

Allan Murray, president of the Camboon Campdraft committee, inspected the damage on Sunday and said the historic hall had been “completely demolished”.<\/p>\n

“Numerous caravans have been written off,” he said in a statement shared with the ABC. “Everyone’s been down here to help.”<\/p>\n

Hundreds without power as Queensland braces for more storms<\/a><\/p>\n

Queensland residents were still reeling from the damage caused by giant hailstones that fell on Saturday as the weather bureau warned of more to come.<\/p>\n

A Queensland Fire Department spokesperson said a woman in her 20s was taken to Moura Hospital with a foot injury at around 7pm, following the shed’s collapse.<\/p>\n

“It is believed approximately 100 people were inside the building at the time of the collapse; however [the vast majority] were uninjured,” the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

Central Queensland wasn’t the only region to be struck by severe storms on Saturday, with parts of south-east Queensland recording hailstones up to nine centimetres in diameter.<\/p>\n
