It\u2019s a question the party has struggled to answer since the ACA passed. Remember Trump\u2019s first term promise to \u201crepeal and replace\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/obamacare\/\" id=\"auto-tag_obamacare\" data-tag=\"obamacare\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Obamacare<\/a> that never came to fruition?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSince the government shut down a month ago, the party has refused to publicly discuss a plan, even as ACA subsidies expire at the end of the year, forcing Americans to pay astronomically higher monthly premiums. In New Jersey, some premiums<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/10\/31\/obamacare-sticker-shock-premium-hikes-00630754\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> will rise <\/a>by more than 175 percent. One family\u2019s premiums will <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/aca-obamacare-enrollment-begins-subsidies\/story?id=127061178\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spike 300 percent<\/a>. Across the board, premiums are expected to increase by an average of 26 percent for a typical ACA plan, a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/quick-take\/aca-insurers-are-raising-premiums-by-an-estimated-26-but-most-enrollees-could-see-sharper-increases-in-what-they-pay\/?utm_campaign=KFF-Medicaid&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_tzQa2up0tdEH8e72tEZOvvL9oL83l579A027oiaztn05zlyWHPyoZjTeTkQEqbmPi9aIpWWY5uquSW1-ijbYgsyghuQ&amp;_hsmi=387333598&amp;utm_content=387333598&amp;utm_source=hs_email\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">KFF analysis<\/a> revealed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe Republicans\u2019 so-called health care plans are so secret, in fact, they won\u2019t share them with members of their own party. Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/marjorie-taylor-greene\/\" id=\"auto-tag_marjorie-taylor-greene\" data-tag=\"marjorie-taylor-greene\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marjorie Taylor Greene<\/a>, who called out House Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/mike-johnson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mike-johnson\" data-tag=\"mike-johnson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Johnson<\/a> last week for not disclosing the party\u2019s plans during a GOP conference call, said during an appearance on Friday\u2019s Real Time with Bill Maher: \u201cMike Johnson, for a month now, cannot give me a single policy idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tShe said at another point during the show, \u201cI\u2019m waiting for the [healthcare] plan. I haven\u2019t seen it yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t(In true MTG style, she also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/nov\/02\/marjorie-taylor-greene-real-time-bill-maher\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">admitted<\/a> to believing that aliens are space demons, saying, \u201cThat\u2019s what makes sense in my worldview.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tConfronted with Greene\u2019s criticism on Fox News Sunday, Johnson said, \u201cI don\u2019t know what to say about that. That\u2019s absurd. Obviously, we\u2019re not gonna be on a conference call explaining all of our plans and strategies for healthcare reform because they\u2019re leaked in real time, literally\u2026 They\u2019re supposed to be private, but they\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bluesky-embed\" data-bluesky-uri=\"at:\/\/did:plc:4llrhdclvdlmmynkwsmg5tdc\/app.bsky.feed.post\/3m4nrggouts2w\" data-bluesky-cid=\"bafyreia5mdarcnkopqdpicafedffd6gwnhyno3eyoxyi6dwdfaqswmtigi\">\n<p lang=\"en\">Mike Johnson talks about the Republican &#8220;healthcare plan&#8221; like it&#8217;s highly classified information: &#8220;We&#8217;re not gonna be on a conference call explaining all our plans and strategies for healthcare reform, because they&#8217;re leaked in real time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/did:plc:4llrhdclvdlmmynkwsmg5tdc?ref_src=embed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com)<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/did:plc:4llrhdclvdlmmynkwsmg5tdc\/post\/3m4nrggouts2w?ref_src=embed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2025-11-02T14:59:34.708Z<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tJohnson then claimed that Greene can visit his office \u201cany day at any hour\u201d and he will \u201clay out everything for her.\u201d He then referenced a 2019 Republican Study Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/rsc-pfluger.house.gov\/framework-for-personalized-affordable-care\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plan<\/a> that proposed changes to healthcare, including re-establishing high-risk pools.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/john-kennedy\/\" id=\"auto-tag_john-kennedy\" data-tag=\"john-kennedy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Kennedy<\/a> floated the idea of high-risk pools in an interview on CNN last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThere are a number of ideas being batted around association health plans,\u201d the Republican senator from Louisiana said, adding, \u201cbringing back high risk pools, which have been outlawed under the Affordable Care Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThese types of pools existed before the ACA banned them, and they were plagued with issues. Premiums in these pools were often twice the rate that lower risk people paid, they often excluded coverage for pre-existing conditions for the first 6-12 months, many had a lifetime coverage limit, and numerous states restricted how many people could join their pool, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/quick-take\/back-to-the-future-a-look-back-at-high-risk-pools\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to<\/a> KFF.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBringing back high-risk pools will only bring back the problems they caused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tPerhaps GOP Rep. Jeff Van Drew best summarized the state of the party\u2019s plans: \u201cIt is politically stupid. It does not make sense to come up with no plan dealing with health care\u2026 The plan is to come up with something better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSo the plan is to have a plan \u2014 eventually. But, Van Drew warned, don\u2019t expect to see that plan anytime soon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThat\u2019s going to take a good part of the year, to have something substantive and real that works,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn the meantime, without a resolution to the shutdown that includes a continuation of the ACA subsidies, millions of Americans will suffer from astronomically higher premiums. All because the Republicans are set on destroying Obamacare, alongside other Democratic policy initiatives. Meanwhile, they continue to enjoy their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/political-commentary\/congress-health-care-premium-government-shutdown-1235454008\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cushy government health benefits.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAs the president put it last month, \u201cWe\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/trump-shutdown-cuts-supercharge-war-equity-1235443934\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">closing up programs<\/a> that are Democrat programs that we were opposed to\u2026 and they\u2019re never going to come back in many cases.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Republicans appear determined to destroy the Affordable Care Act, but what will go in its place?
