{"id":351166,"date":"2025-11-02T21:27:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-02T21:27:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/351166\/"},"modified":"2025-11-02T21:27:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-02T21:27:10","slug":"one-monkey-caught-two-still-missing-in-mississippi-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/351166\/","title":{"rendered":"One monkey caught, two still missing in Mississippi | News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mississippi authorities have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/news\/tulane-monkeys-mississippi-crash\/article_c3ce43db-a67e-477b-b4f2-7591ea767b5e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">captured an escaped monkey<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0had been on the lam since Tuesday after the truck carrying it flipped over a highway median, the Jasper County Sheriff&#8217;s Department said.<\/p>\n<p>A homeowner found the monkey on his property near Heidelberg, Mississippi, according to a social media statement posted early Sunday. The\u00a0Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries responded, and the rhesus macaque is now in the department\u2019s possession. Two other monkeys remain on the loose.<\/p>\n<p>The apprehended monkey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/news\/tulane-primate-research-center-biomedical-monkey\/article_df90a3ee-0b99-46e2-bf66-15ba5507afc8.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was being transported<\/a> along with 20 other macaques from Tulane University\u2019s National Biomedical Research Center on the northshore when the truck carrying them crashed. Initial reports from the scene claimed the monkeys were \u201caggressive\u201d and may have been infected with herpes, COVID-19 and hepatitis C.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tulane officials quickly clarified that the monkeys were not infectious, but not before Mississippi authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/news\/aggressive-monkeys-leaving-tulane-escape-in-mississippi-crash-killed-by-authorities\/article_b1f19c4c-3834-4ceb-8587-d6a3eefb3bb5.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">killed five of them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the days since, officials have left questions about the crash unanswered. It isn\u2019t clear where the monkeys were headed or why some had to be killed. The Jasper County Sheriff\u2019s Office said in a social media post Tuesday evening that the truck\u2019s driver warned authorities the monkeys were dangerous and that anyone handling them should be wearing personal protective equipment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took the appropriate actions after being given that information from the person transporting the monkey,\u201d the sheriff\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday morning, the sheriff\u2019s office declined to provide any comment beyond what was in Sunday\u2019s social media statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Tulane spokesperson Michael Strecker previously said that the university was not involved in the monkeys\u2019 transportation, but confirmed that they had left Tulane\u2019s research center shortly before the \u201ctragic incident\u201d took place. (AP Photo\/Sophie Bates)<\/p>\n<p>                                    Sophie Bates<\/p>\n<p>Though it may be alarming to have monkeys running around rural Mississippi, Tony Goldberg, a professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine who specializes in cross-species disease transmission, stressed that the monkeys aren\u2019t likely to set off the next pandemic.
