This rated-R action film was shot at a River Oaks cigar lounge, and it’s part of a much bigger plan for Houston’s film industry.<\/p>\n

HOUSTON \u2014 It\u2019s lights, camera, action \u2014 right here in Houston.<\/p>\n

In a cigar lounge in River Oaks, local director Andre Wiley is calling the shots on a new action movie titled Conflict.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m extremely excited to be making an action movie in the city I grew up in,\u201d Wiley said.<\/p>\n

The Houston native says he\u2019s thrilled not only to bring Hollywood-style production to his hometown, but also to provide opportunities for local cast and crew. And while the film may have a big heart for Houston, Wiley jokes that it\u2019s not exactly a family film.<\/p>\n

When asked if Conflict was something families could watch together, Wiley laughed. \u201cNo, it\u2019s a conflict movie \u2014 a rated R movie,\u201d he said. \u201cBring the bigger kids, not the smaller kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nA familiar face in a different role <\/p>\n

One of the film\u2019s stars is a face many Houstonians already know \u2014 criminal defense attorney Dan Cogdell.<\/strong> In Conflict, he plays a mob boss.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn keeping with the criminal defense lawyer character, I play a mob boss,\u201d Cogdell said with a grin. \u201cMy wife would argue that I very much understand the criminal mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nHouston\u2019s film scene on the rise <\/p>\n

Behind the camera, executive producer Joe Newcomb, also from Houston, believes the city is on the verge of becoming a major player in the film industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of films left Hollywood and went to Atlanta,\u201d Newcomb said. \u201cI think there\u2019s no doubt Houston will be the new Atlanta \u2014 it\u2019s already happening. People are coming in. I\u2019ve heard Tyler Perry\u2019s shooting a movie here in Houston, 50 Cent has moved his production company here, and I think many others will follow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Newcomb credits new state and local incentives for attracting productions like Conflict to the area.<\/p>\n

\nMore movies ahead <\/p>\n

The producers say Conflict is expected to hit theaters in November. They also plan to shoot five films a year in Houston \u2014 a sign that the city\u2019s growing film industry is here to stay.<\/p>\n

\u201cQuiet on set,\u201d Wiley called out between takes. Conflict \u2014 coming soon to a theater near you.<\/p>\n
