{"id":351741,"date":"2025-11-03T03:37:19","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T03:37:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/351741\/"},"modified":"2025-11-03T03:37:19","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T03:37:19","slug":"trump-talks-nyc-mayoral-race-government-shutdown-and-nuclear-weapons-in-tense-60-minutes-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/351741\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump talks NYC mayoral race, government shutdown and nuclear weapons in tense \u201860 Minutes\u2019 return"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Trump tore into Democrats over the ongoing government shutdown, justified his order to restart nuclear weapons testing in the US and defended his administration\u2019s ICE raids in a sometimes-intense \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview Sunday \u2013 his first with CBS News since suing the network\u2019s parent company.<\/p>\n<p>Sparks flew early as anchor Norah O\u2019Donnell, sitting with Trump at his gilded Florida Mar-a-Lago estate, came out of the gates with a question about the president\u2019s handling of the shutdown, the second-longest in US history at 33 days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have helped these government shutdowns in the past,\u201d O\u2019Donnell said, prompting a testy back-and-forth in which the two tried to talk over one another.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump touched on NYC\u2019s mayoral race and other topics during his \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview on Sunday night. CBS<\/p>\n<p>Trump,\u00a0at one point,\u00a0shot back: \u201cI\u2019m not gonna do it by being extorted by the Democrats who have lost their way. There\u2019s something wrong with these people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then pinned the blame on a Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, whom he called a \u201cbasket case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s gonna be defeated in the next election by a vast number of people. And he has nothing to lose. He\u2019s become a kamikaze pilot,\u201d Trump railed.<\/p>\n<p>Trump continued to jab at NYC mayoral frontrunner and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani. Aristide Economopoulos<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Schumer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/29\/us-news\/chuck-schumer-demands-gopers-put-food-stamps-only-bill-to-vote-instead-of-reopening-government-with-snap-benefits-set-to-stop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proposed approving a food stamps-only bill<\/a>\u00a0to compensate for the SNAP benefits hanging in the balance instead of voting to reopen the government in full.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Schumer and his fellow Senate Democrats have voted over a dozen times to keep the government shut down from Oct. 1.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u00a0later on in the \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview\u00a0doubled down on his intention to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/29\/us-news\/trump-orders-pentagon-to-immediately-restart-nuclear-weapons-testing-to-compete-with-russia-chinas-arsenals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">restart testing the US\u2019 nuclear weaponry<\/a>, which he boasted could \u201cblow up the world 150 times.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do we need to test our nuclear weapons?\u201d O\u2019Donnell snapped.<\/p>\n<p>To which Trump replied: \u201cWe\u2019re the only country that doesn\u2019t test, and I don\u2019t wanna be the only country that doesn\u2019t test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president then cited Russia and China \u2013 both of which he said are actively testing their nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Russia\u2019s President Vladimir Putin announced that his country\u2019s military successfully\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/29\/world-news\/putin-announces-russia-tested-poseidon-nuclear-torpedo-which-can-destroy-cities-with-radioactive-tsunamis\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tested a nuclear-powered torpedo<\/a><strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The president also reiterated his push for the US to start testing nuclear missiles again. US AIR FORCE\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Days earlier, Putin also celebrated Russia\u2019s \u201cinvincible\u201d nuclear-powered cruise missile nicknamed a \u201ctiny flying Chernobyl\u201d by experts.<\/p>\n<p>Trump explained that, if there were a ranking, the US would have the best nuclear weapons, with Russia shortly behind and China in third.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Donnell noted that it \u201cwould be certainly very newsworthy\u201d if there was any confirmation that China was testing its nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The commander in chief defended his administration\u2019s ICE raids and argued\u00a0 \u201cthey haven\u2019t gone far enough\u201d when O\u2019Donnell cited concerns from critics.<\/p>\n<p>The interview also waded into New York City\u2019s mayor\u2019s race, with Trump slamming \u201ccommunist\u201d frontrunner Zohran Mamdani.<\/p>\n<p>Trump floated withholding government funds if Mamdani is elected on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it\u2019s gonna be hard for me as the president to give a lot of money to New York.
