{"id":35204,"date":"2025-07-03T11:51:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T11:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/35204\/"},"modified":"2025-07-03T11:51:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T11:51:11","slug":"less-than-50-homicides-reported-in-jacksonville-in-first-half-of-2025-with-significant-drop-in-child-teen-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/35204\/","title":{"rendered":"Less than 50 homicides reported in Jacksonville in first half of 2025 with significant drop in child, teen deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 So far in 2025, Jacksonville is on track to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2025\/01\/03\/jacksonville-violence-takes-historic-tumble-in-2024-city-reports-lowest-homicide-numbers-in-2-decades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2025\/01\/03\/jacksonville-violence-takes-historic-tumble-in-2024-city-reports-lowest-homicide-numbers-in-2-decades\/\">match last year\u2019s historic low for homicides<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Less than 50 homicides have been reported in the first six months of the year, a similar number to the first half of 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office Public Information Officer Max Morel pointed out that Sheriff T.K. Waters has said more than once that \u201cone murder is one too many.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">But the relatively low numbers are encouraging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office continues to remain committed to the reduction of violent crimes across our great city,\u201d Morel said in a statement to News4JAX. \u201cThis effort is made possible through strong leadership and forward-thinking innovative strategies. Now he saves people from gang life in Jacksonville<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Those gang-related crime reduction initiatives could be behind a significant improvement the city has seen in the first half of the year: a major reduction in the number of homicide victims under 18 years old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">By this time last year, nine children and teens had fallen victim to violence in the city. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In the first six months of 2025, the city has reported three child homicides: A 2-year-old who died after accidentally shooting himself, a 15-year-old killed in January, and, of course, the high-profile murder of 7-year-old Breon Lee Allen Jr. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">No arrest has been made in the January shooting death of 15-year-old Willie Donta Pipes Jr. Daryvan Spell, 31, has been charged with child neglect in the case of the 2-year-old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The six young men arrested in Allen\u2019s murder range from 17 to 24 years old, and investigators say his shooting death was connected to an ongoing gang rivalry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt was a targeted, planned act, one with which, during the murders, clearly saw Breon walking innocently with the intended target,\u201d a visibly angry Waters said when he announced the arrests earlier this year, calling the shooting a \u201cheinous act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The search for those involved in Allen\u2019s murder made headlines, but his was only one of the murder cases JSO has cleared this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Of the 37 murder cases reported through the end of June, 16 remain unsolved, keeping JSO on par with the average solve rate across the country of just over 50%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Morel emphasized in his statement the importance of community involvement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cOur continued progress would not be possible without the support and partnership of our community alongside our State Attorney\u2019s Office. Our collaborative approach with prosecutors has strengthened our collective impact. Equally as important is the support and engagement from the community. This involvement remains a cornerstone of the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office\u2019s core value, Community Focused.
