{"id":352110,"date":"2025-11-03T07:26:24","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T07:26:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/352110\/"},"modified":"2025-11-03T07:26:24","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T07:26:24","slug":"with-2-days-to-go-before-nyc-mayoral-election-mamdani-and-cuomo-visit-nyc-churches-canvass-voters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/352110\/","title":{"rendered":"With 2 days to go before NYC mayoral election, Mamdani and Cuomo visit NYC churches, canvass voters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With two days left <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/10\/22\/mamdani-and-cuomo-tear-into-each-other-during-fiery-final-nyc-mayoral-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">before Election Day<\/a> and a record-breaking 735,000 early votes cast, New York mayoral candidates Zohran Mamdani and Andrew Cuomo traded swipes and rallied supporters at church campaign stops just a borough apart Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani spoke to packed pews <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/99jpUIN8uUg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at First Corinthian Baptist Church in Harlem,<\/a> then glad-handed a crowd of supporters and volunteers outside nearby the place of worship.<\/p>\n<p>At the pulpit, Mamdani touched on his familiar policy proposals, including a rent freeze for the city\u2019s rent-stabilized tenants, affordable housing, universal child care and free buses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I know that these are lofty aspirations,\u201d he said. \u201cBut to those who say they are too ambitious, I answer that ambition is exactly what befits the greatest city in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He saved his hits on Cuomo for the reporters and crowd outside the church, calling the former New York governor \u201cTrump\u2019s parrot\u201d and decrying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/10\/23\/cuomo-comes-under-fire-for-engaging-in-islamophobic-9-11-rhetoric-about-mamdani-on-radio-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cIslamophobic\u201d attacks against him<\/a> in the final days of the race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have been moments where even I have been shocked by the language that has been used in this race and by the fact that we are seeing more and more of the kind of politics that disgusts so many New Yorkers in Washington, D.C., now endemic in the politics right here in New York City,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing questions about <a href=\"https:\/\/atlasintel.org\/polls\/general-release-polls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an AtlasIntel poll<\/a> released Saturday showing Cuomo narrowing the cap with Mamdani to 6.6%, he said,\u00a0 \u201cMy mother called me the other day. She asked me which poll do we believe? Polls which told us we should just pack it up and go home, and we continued to knock on those doors and we won,\u201d he added. \u201cWe want to make sure we speak to everyone we can before polls close.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, remains the front-runner after his surprise victory against Cuomo in the June Democratic primary. He now leads Cuomo in most polls by double digits, with Republican Curtis Sliwa trailing a distant third.<\/p>\n<p>As of late Sunday when early voting polls closed at 5 p.m., more than 735,000 New Yorkers had already cast ballots \u2014 about two-thirds the roughly 1,149,000 who <a href=\"https:\/\/vote.nyc\/sites\/default\/files\/pdf\/election_results\/2021\/20211102General%20Election\/00000200000Citywide%20Mayor%20Citywide%20Recap.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voted in total in 2021.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I\u2019m going to vote for him. I think he was sincere. His words today were very very sincere.\u201d Latoya Brockington, 45, said after watching Mamdani\u2019s speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery single thing is going up except for the paychecks. \u2026 It\u2019s really really hard, especially for single moms, for myself. \u2026 Cuomo already had his chance. He was in office. (Rebecca White \/ New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>Over in the South Bronx, Cuomo spoke to an enthusiastic congregation at the Union Grove Baptist Church, detailing how he hoped to give people already living in a neighborhood first chance at getting affordable housing there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re losing too many communities where gentrifiers are coming into the community, and they\u2019re raising the rent and they\u2019re destroying the character of the community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also pressed for adding 5,000 officers to the NYPD \u201cbecause the number of police is just too low, and we have to be safe\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo highlighted his stance on education, saying he wants to expand gifted and talented programs and keep mayoral control of the city school system \u2014 while Mamdani has floated weakening mayoral control and scaling gifted and talented programs back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublic schools, we have to do a better job, especially with those in Black and Brown communities,\u201d Cuomo said. \u201cI will make that a top priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo joked about voters wanting a fresh face, telling the congregation, \u201cI think my face is fairly fresh. I mean, it\u2019s not right-out-of-the-box fresh. But there\u2019s something to experience and wisdom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside the church, Cuomo addressed a gaggle of reporters, blasting Mamdani.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody has a little slogan and now they do a little TikTok dance, and nothing changes,\u201d he said. \u201cHis promises are all BS. None of it will happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus Mims, 62, who lives across the street from the church, said he\u2019d have worn his Sunday best if he knew Cuomo would be speaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe helped the MTA. He helped us get our contracts. He helped us get our pensions,\u201d the retired MTA worker said of Cuomo\u2019s time as governor. \u201cListen, he helped us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda Rivera, 51, cheered and yelled \u201cVote Cuomo!\u201d from her window. She said her family loves him for his relief efforts as governor when Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe always did good by us,\u201d she said. \u201cI will never forget what he did for Puerto Rico.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGod bless!\u201d she yelled, adding, \u201cWe loved your father, also!\u201d referring to former Gov.
