In the absence of election results, the newspaper assumed that New York Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/empirestateplaza.ny.gov\/hall-governors\/thomas-e-dewey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/empirestateplaza.ny.gov\/hall-governors\/thomas-e-dewey\">Thomas E. Dewey<\/a>\u00a0(Republican) would sink incumbent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about-the-white-house\/presidents\/harry-s-truman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about-the-white-house\/presidents\/harry-s-truman\/\">Harry S. Truman<\/a> (Democrat). He didn\u2019t. And the blunder \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/11\/02\/vintage-chicago-tribune-5-things-that-led-to-dewey-defeats-truman-the-newspapers-most-famous-headline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cDewey Defeats Truman\u201d<\/a> \u2014 appeared atop a single edition of the Tribune.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1983:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-jackson-candidacy-ushere\/184046892\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rev. Jesse Jackson<\/a> announced his candidacy for president in Washington.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"qyxWj5g3Sy\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/10\/07\/highlights-in-the-life-of-rev-jesse-jackson-minister-civil-rights-advocate-politician-intermediary-social-justice-proponent-and-covid-19-survivor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rev. Jesse Jackson\u2019s life: Minister, civil rights advocate, politician, intermediary, social justice proponent and COVID-19 survivor<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He placed third in Democratic primary voting behind Sen. Gary Hart and former Vice President Walter Mondale, who took the nomination. (Walter Kale\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1992:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-more-history-for-congres\/184047039\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ald. Luis Gutierrez<\/a> of the 26th Ward became the first Latino member of Congress for Illinois. He served almost 26 years in office before endorsing Jesus \u201cChuy\u201d Garcia \u2014 who won handily \u2014 in the 2018 election. Born in Chicago and of Puerto Rican descent, Gutierrez was a vocal critic of President Donald Trump administration\u2019s response to the heavy damage inflicted there by Hurricane Maria in 2017. The congressman visited the island to deliver food and supplies from Chicagoans. Gutierrez was among a half-dozen Democrats who introduced articles of impeachment against Trump in November 2017.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"bul16qbXKm\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2017\/11\/28\/timeline-of-us-rep-luis-gutierrez-and-c-shaped-4th-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Timeline of U.S. Rep.
