Shang said she owed him $100,000 and had stopped answering his phone calls.<\/p>\n
Shang and his accomplice had hoped to confront ‘Linda’ after learning she had recently returned to Canberra after some time away.<\/p>\n
However, when they knocked on the door, they found a couple inside who said they did not know where the woman was.<\/p>\n
The situation escalated when the pair pushed their way into the home and a verbal argument turned violent.<\/p>\n
Shang was found guilty of punching the man and punching or pushing the woman.<\/p>\n
His co-accused also attacked the pair, punching and kicking the woman in what Justice Verity McWilliam described as “losing physical control”.<\/p>\n
The male victim said that during the confrontation Shang’s accomplice told him the pair had served in China’s special forces.<\/p>\n
The co-accused later admitted they had no connection to any special forces unit and he had made the claim only to frighten the couple.<\/p>\n
Shang was assessed for an intensive corrections order, which would have allowed him to serve his sentence in the community, but Justice McWilliam said that would not be necessary.<\/p>\n
“The character references provided on behalf of the offender demonstrate that, apart from this one incident, he is known to be a kind and gentle individual,”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Justice McWilliam said.<\/p>\n
“He is entitled to leniency, and I am satisfied that what occurred was an isolated event in the offender’s life.”<\/p>\n
She said an intensive corrections order was not warranted because there was nothing to correct.<\/p>\n
“The whole process and expense of undergoing a criminal trial coupled with the two days in custody has, in my view, served as sufficient immediate punishment and personal deterrence for this offender,” Justice McWilliam said.<\/p>\n
Shang was sentenced to one year, nine months and four days in prison, which was immediately suspended by the judge.<\/p>\n
