CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Local and state health departments are testing the water at The Christ Hospital\u2019s main campus after two people were diagnosed with Legionnaires\u2019 disease. <\/p>\n
The Christ Hospital Health Network told FOX19 NOW in a statement that the two cases appeared separately \u201cover the past six weeks,\u201d which would be some time between mid-September and the end of October. <\/p>\n
Both people have since been diagnosed with Legionella pneumonia, which potentially came from The Christ Hospital\u2019s main campus, although it is not confirmed, the hospital network said. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhile the exact source of exposure for these individuals is currently unknown, The Christ Hospital immediately initiated additional environmental testing protocols to identify any potential hospital-related sources and ensure maximum levels of safety,\u201d The Christ Hospital Health Network wrote in a statement. <\/p>\n
Legionnaires\u2019 disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. The bacteria is often found in natural and man-made water systems. <\/p>\n
When contaminated water is inhaled, i.e. in the shower or from air conditioning, the bacteria can enter the lungs and cause an infection. <\/p>\n
The disease is not contagious and cannot be spread from person to person. <\/p>\n
The Cincinnati Health Department, Hamilton County Public Health and the Ohio Department of Health are conducting additional water tests at Christ Hospital\u2019s main campus in response to the two cases. <\/p>\n
The departments are also installing filters on faucets and showers while testing continues. <\/p>\n
\u201cAs part of its standard safety practice, The Christ Hospital routinely monitors, tests, and treats its water systems to minimize the presence of Legionella and other waterborne pathogens,\u201d The Christ Hospital Health Network wrote. <\/p>\n
As of now, the network says there is no indication the hospital\u2019s water is unsafe. <\/p>\n
The risk to patients, visitors and staff is low, they said. <\/p>\n
