The Federal Aviation Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fly.faa.gov\/adv\/adv_otherdis?advn=55&amp;adv_date=11032025&amp;facId=AUS&amp;title=ATCSCC%20ADVZY%20055%20AUS\/ZHU%2011\/03\/2025%20CDM%20GROUND%20DELAY%20PROGRAM&amp;titleDate=11\/03\/2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> a ground delay at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport Monday afternoon due to staffing issues. And Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport had experienced more delays and cancellations Monday than all but one other airport in the country, according to the flight tracking site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightaware.com\/miserymap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FlightAware<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Monday\u2019s issues followed a weekend of scheduling woes at Texas\u2019 two largest airports. On Sunday, 23% of all flights from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and 32% of flights from Bush Intercontinental Airport were delayed, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightaware.com\/live\/cancelled\/yesterday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FlightAware<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Airports problems have accelerated as the government shutdown, which began Oct. 1, has gone on and led to missed paychecks for airport personnel, including air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration agents. While those workers are expected to continue on the job without pay, air traffic controllers have increasingly called in sick, which the Federal Aviation Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FAANews\/status\/1984421934445031468\">said<\/a> was \u201cstraining staffing levels at multiple facilities\u201d for a workforce that already <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/airlines-flights-delays-shutdown-538fcee7931eefed1acc50b104a67d1f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">faced a shortage<\/a> before the shutdown.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cAfter 31 days without pay, air traffic controllers are under immense stress and fatigue,\u201d the agency said in a statement Friday. \u201cThe shutdown must end so that these controllers receive the pay they\u2019ve earned and travelers can avoid further disruptions and delays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The government shut down at midnight on Oct. 1 when members of Congress failed to reach an agreement to keep funding federal agencies beyond the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30. Republicans voted for a stopgap resolution to fund the government at its current level through mid-November, while Democrats supported an effort to extend enhanced premium tax credits \u2014 a subsidy for Affordable Care Act premiums that expires at the end of the year \u2014 as part of the spending bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Democrats have said Congress needs to address the looming subsidy expiration \u2014 which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/10\/31\/texas-aca-premiums-health-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has already spiked<\/a> 2026 health insurance premiums \u2014 while Republicans say the government needs to open before they negotiate on health care. Many GOP lawmakers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/10\/02\/texas-republicans-affordable-care-act-premium-tax-credits-shutdown-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including from Texas<\/a>, have said they want to significantly reform the tax credits or revert them to their pre-expansion form.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In the meantime, airport leaders have advised travelers to arrive earlier than normal for flights and stressed that an end to the shutdown is the only remedy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe federal government shutdown has impacted TSA staffing and operations nationwide, and Houston Airports is doing everything possible to support our TSA partners and keep passengers moving safely and efficiently,\u201d Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for the Houston Airport System, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AirportsHouston\/status\/1985116343557914781\">said<\/a> in a statement Sunday. \u201cWe ask that passengers continue to arrive early and expect extended security wait times until the federal government shutdown is resolved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In an interview with CBS, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/sean-duffy-transportation-secretary-face-the-nation-transcrpt-11-02-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">predicted<\/a> that air travel delays are \u201conly going to get worse\u201d as long as the shutdown continues and federal employees increasingly call in sick. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe work overtime to make sure the system is safe,\u201d Duffy said. \u201cAnd we will slow traffic down, you\u2019ll see delays, we\u2019ll have flights canceled to make sure the system is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">On Wednesday, the shutdown will reach the 35-day mark, which would make this spending impasse tied for the longest in U.S. history. The deadlock threatens to extend into Thanksgiving, when airports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afar.com\/magazine\/tsa-just-had-its-busiest-week-ever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">typically see<\/a> their busiest days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">As the shutdown continues, Dallas Love Field <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DallasLoveField\/status\/1984622230144262610\">announced<\/a> a donation drive at the airport for federal employees working without pay.
