CHICAGO \u2014\u00a0President Donald Trump backed the violent tactics federal immigration agents have used in Chicago in recent months, saying agents \u201chaven\u2019t gone far enough\u201d during a \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview<\/a> this weekend.<\/p>\n

The president appeared on CBS\u2019 show Sunday night, answering questions about his administration\u2019s immigration enforcement throughout the United States.<\/p>\n

Interviewer Norah O\u2019Donnell asked Trump about the enforcement activities,\u00a0saying, \u201cPeople been watching videos of ICE tackling a young mother, tear gas being used in a Chicago residential neighborhood, and the smashing of car windows. Have some of these raids gone too far?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. I don\u2019t think they have gone far enough,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

When O\u2019Donnell asked if Trump was \u201cOK\u201d with the tactics that have been used, the president said he is.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, because you have to get the people out,\u201d Trump said. \u201cYou know, you have to look at the people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump then repeated his administration\u2019s often-repeated but unproven claim that many of the people being taken by agents are \u201cmurderers \u2026 criminals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s Department of Homeland Security has repeatedly refused to provide information about the majority of people it has taken into custody \u2014 but Block Club reporters and others have shown that numerous detained people have had no or minimal criminal history.<\/p>\n

At another point, Trump said that sanctuary cities \u2014 of which Chicago is one \u2014 \u201chave to be changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things I really have focused on is making Chicago great again,\u201d Trump said during the interview. \u201cAnd we\u2019re just getting started in Chicago.\u201d<\/p>\n

In September, ICE and Border Patrol launched operations Midway Blitz and At Large, which are supposed to focus on arresting and removing undocumented immigrants with serious criminal histories.<\/p>\n

But federal agents have\u00a0shot at least two people<\/a>,\u00a0killing one<\/a>; repeatedly\u00a0tear-gassed protesters<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0first responders<\/a>;\u00a0shot rubber bullets<\/a>\u00a0at protesters;\u00a0detained U.S. citizens<\/a>,\u00a0including children<\/a>;\u00a0handcuffed a Chicago alderperson in a hospital<\/a>;\u00a0smoke bombed and tear-gassed a Chicago street<\/a>;\u00a0fired a chemical weapon at a TV reporter<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0detained a journalist<\/a>, among other incidents.<\/p>\n

Local leaders and residents have repeatedly criticized the operations and sought ways to peacefully resist.<\/p>\n

Trump has also hinted that he could invoke the Insurrection Act to get around a ruling barring the deployment. The act is supposed to be used by the federal government to aid in putting down rebellions, but Trump seemed to suggest he would use it to address crime in Chicago \u2014 where\u00a0violent crime has been steadily falling<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump brought up the Insurrection Act again during his \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview while making a reference to Chicago.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you know that I could use that immediately and no judge can even challenge you on that?\u201d Trump said. \u201cBut I haven\u2019t chosen to do it because I haven\u2019t felt we need it. Do you know that we have a place called Chicago that, with a very bad governor. \u2026 He won\u2019t let us bring in the National Guard.\u201d<\/p>\n

At another point, Trump said, \u201cBut if I needed [the Insurrection Act], I could do it. And if I needed it, that would mean I could bring in the Army, the Marines, I could bring in whoever I want. But I haven\u2019t chosen to use it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Immigration Agents On Far North Side\u00a0<\/p>\n

Immigration agents detained at least four people Monday morning in Chicago, said Brandon Lee, communications director for the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.<\/p>\n

Rapid response groups confirmed sightings of immigration agents in Uptown, Edgewater, Ravenswood, Albany Park and West Ridge, Lee said. <\/p>\n

About 9:30 a.m., agents detained one person at 2030 W. Warner Ave., according to the Uptown\/Edgewater rapid response team.<\/a><\/p>\n

Neighbor Paul Lohmuller was inside his home when he saw ICE agents in the alley, surrounding a man, he said. He went outside to record and ask the man for more information, but by the time he approached, agents had already moved the man into a SUV, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is the second time federal agents have detained someone on Lohmuller\u2019s block in the past two weeks, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess you never expect it to happen literally in front of you. I don\u2019t know, North Center is such a sleepy little place,\u201d Lohmuller said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After witnessing the detention, Lohmuller reported the sighting to the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights hotline. He encourages others to do the same by calling 855-435-7693.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is definitely something where we need our neighbors to step up and help out,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At 10 a.m., immigration agents detained a landscaper at West Thome and North Glenwood avenues, according to the Uptown\/Edgewater rapid response team.<\/a><\/p>\n

By late morning, the scenes where these detentions happened were quiet.<\/p>\n
