Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo spent the final day of his independent New York City mayoral campaign<\/a> crisscrossing the five boroughs on Monday in a white Ford Bronco, making a last-minute appeal to voters.<\/p>\n

The independent candidate focused on his three main talking points of the campaign: public safety, education, and a promise to stand up to both President Donald Trump and what he called the \u201cradical left,\u201d which he said is causing a \u201cquiet civil war\u201d within the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the most important election of my lifetime,\u201d Cuomo said during a stop at the Chinatown Senior Center on Gold Street, joined by his daughters, Michaela and Mariah. \u201cIt\u2019s not between two parties, Democrat and Republican. It\u2019s between two very different philosophies.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former governor rejected suggestions that Trump\u2019s recent remarks on \u201c60 Minutes\u201d amounted to an endorsement, insisting instead that the former president \u201ccalled me a bad Democrat.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

During the CBS interview on Sunday,<\/a> Trump stated that while he is not a \u201cfan\u201d of Cuomo, he prefers him over Mamdani. Trump also repeated threats to withhold federal funding from New York if Mamdani is elected, falsely labeling him a communist.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be hard for me as the president to give a lot of money to New York. Because if you have a communist running New York, all you\u2019re doing is wasting the money you\u2019re sending there,\u201d Trump said.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m not a fan of Cuomo one way or the other, but if it\u2019s gonna be between a bad Democrat and a Communist, I\u2019m gonna pick the bad Democrat all the time, to be honest with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Monday afternoon, Trump went a step further and officially endorsed Cuomo in a Truth social post<\/a>.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

Responding on Monday, Cuomo said that the label of \u201cbad Democrat was an unfair one, saying, \u201cI happen to be a good Democrat and a proud Democrat. We need a mayor who can stand up to Donald Trump and get the funding the city deserves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump did not endorse me,\u201d Cuomo contended. \u201cI said repeatedly, I would not accept Donald Trump\u2019s endorsement.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Cuomo pointed to his record of clashing with Trump during his time as governor. \u201cI know how to stop President Trump from doing bad things to New York, and I will,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n

In his remarks at the Chinatown Senior Center,\u00a0Cuomo warned voters that frontrunner Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee and a democratic socialist, would turn New York City into a \u201csocialist city,\u201d saying socialism \u201chas not worked anywhere on the globe \u2014 not in Venezuela, not in Cuba \u2014 and it\u2019s not going to work in New York City.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cuomo and other opponents of the Queens Assembly Member have argued throughout the campaign that his affordability proposals \u2014 including free city buses and a pilot program for city-owned grocery stores \u2014 are irresponsible and unrealistic.<\/a><\/p>\n

The former governor continued his attack on Mamdani, 34, who handily defeated him in the June Democratic primary, saying he was unqualified to run the city because of his limited time in the state legislature.<\/p>\n

\u201cMayor of New York City would be his first real job, and New York City mayor is too big a job, too important a job,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n

Mamdani \u2018not the future of the party\u2019<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters, Cuomo argued that the race reflected what he called a \u201cquiet civil war\u201d within the Democratic Party, citing Mamdani\u2019s affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have moderate Democrats, such as myself,\u201d Cuomo said. \u201cI used to be a crazy liberal Democrat, right? My father was a crazy liberal Democrat. I didn\u2019t change, but the party shifted, so now they call me a moderate. And you have an extreme radical left, which are socialists.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cI don\u2019t believe New York City thrives as a socialist city. I don\u2019t think the Democratic Party thrives as a socialist party. I don\u2019t believe Americans will accept the Democratic Party as a socialist party that supports a socialist economy that is anti\u2013law and order.\u201d<\/p>\n

His remarks came a day after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said he does not view Mamdani as the future of the Democratic Party<\/a>, despite offering a late endorsement<\/a> following his criticism of the DSA.<\/p>\n

Back inside the senior center, Cuomo closed by urging supporters to turn out to vote. \u201cEverybody has to vote, because the future of the city of New York rides on this election,\u201d he said. \u201cWe can make this city better than ever before. We can make the Big Apple shine brighter than ever before, but I need you to vote for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Focusing on public safety, Cuomo promised to hire 5,000 additional police officers, including 1,500 for the subway system, and to halt the borough-based jail project. He also said he would expand the city\u2019s gifted and talented education programs and \u201cdouble the number of specialized high schools.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cuomo\u2019s final campaign day included stops in the Bronx, Washington Heights, Flushing, Staten Island, and Brooklyn.\n<\/p>\n

Before leaving for his next stop in Brownsville on Monday afternoon, reporters noted that Cuomo\u2019s white Ford Bronco resembled the model made infamous by O.J. Simpson\u2019s 1994 slow-speed police chase after he was charged with murdering his wife.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to drive very slow,\u201d Cuomo quipped of the classic car he bought for his daughter in 2013.<\/a><\/p>\n
