{"id":353965,"date":"2025-11-04T02:20:16","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T02:20:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/353965\/"},"modified":"2025-11-04T02:20:16","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T02:20:16","slug":"as-conde-nast-folds-teen-vogue-into-vogue-newsguild-condemns-the-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/353965\/","title":{"rendered":"As Cond\u00e9 Nast Folds Teen Vogue Into Vogue, NewsGuild Condemns the Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe union representing writers at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/teen-vogue\/\" id=\"auto-tag_teen-vogue_1\" data-tag=\"teen-vogue\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Teen Vogue<\/a> is slamming the youth-focused publication\u2019s merger with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/vogue\/\" id=\"auto-tag_vogue_1\" data-tag=\"vogue\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vogue<\/a> website and raising concerns about impacts on staff diversity and political coverage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, Cond\u00e9 United and parent union The NewsGuild of New York said they \u201cstrongly condemn Cond\u00e9 Nast\u2019s consolidation plans for Teen Vogue.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/labor\/\" id=\"auto-tag_labor_1\" data-tag=\"labor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">labor<\/a> groups claim the move was \u201cclearly designed to blunt the award-winning magazine\u2019s insightful journalism at a time when it is needed the most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tVogue <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/teen-vogue-is-joining-voguecom\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> that the 22-year-old brand would be folded into the flagship brand\u2019s website on Monday. Though the title is set to continue as a \u201cdistinct editorial property,\u201d the magazine\u2019s current editor-in-chief Versha Sharma is leaving the company and Vogue head of editorial content Chloe Malle will take the reins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn a statement, Malle said she was dedicated to \u201ccontinuing and supporting its point of view and sensibility.\u201d The announcement added that, on Vogue.com, Teen Vogue will focus on \u201ccareer development, cultural leadership and other issues that matter most to young people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe newsroom union claims the change is throttling staff diversity and muting the magazine\u2019s progressive political bent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cManagement plans to lay off six of our members, most of whom are BIPOC women or trans, including Teen Vogue\u2019s Politics Editor \u2014 continuing the trend of layoffs at Cond\u00e9 disproportionately impacting marginalized employees,\u201d the organizations stated. They added, \u201cTeen Vogue now has no writers or editors explicitly covering politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe groups continued, \u201cAs of today, only one woman of color remains on the editorial staff at\u00a0Teen Vogue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tEstablished in 2003, Teen Vogue began as a fashion- and celebrity-focused publication under the direction of former Vogue beauty director Amy Astley. Its first cover star was Gwen Stefani, followed by Beyonc\u00e9 one month later. The clothes on display weren\u2019t all couture, but they did represent an aspirational lifestyle: It was common to see individual items priced at hundreds of dollars, from Prada subsidiary Miu Miu or French luxury label A.P.C., on the magazine\u2019s pages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe magazine\u2019s focus took a turn under the leadership of former editor Elaine Welteroth, who was named editor-in-chief in 2016. The publication amped up its coverage of politics, immigration, labor and climate change. Even after Teen Vogue ceased print publication in 2017 and Welteroth departed a year later, its site kept jumping into the fray on President Donald Trump, the war in Gaza, even progressive New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn their statement, Cond\u00e9 United and the NewsGuild of New York vowed to get more clarity on Teen Vogue\u2019s trajectory moving forward. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cCond\u00e9 leadership owes us answers \u2013 and Teen Vogue\u2019s readership. Gone, from the lauded politics section, is the work that made possible the blockbuster cover of Vivian Wilson, one of Cond\u00e9 Nast\u2019s top performing stories of the year, coordinated by the singular trans staffer laid off today. Nearly all of these staffers identify as LGBTQ. As of today, only one woman of color remains on the editorial staff at\u00a0Teen Vogue.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCond\u00e9 leadership owes us answers \u2013 and Teen Vogue\u2019s readership.
