Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that worsens through the winter months and goes away with the arrival of spring and longer days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org\/discussion\/mayo-clinic-qa-seasonal-affective-disorder-is-more-than-feeling-sad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org\/discussion\/mayo-clinic-qa-seasonal-affective-disorder-is-more-than-feeling-sad\/\">The Mayo Clinic<\/a> reports that the cause is not known, though it could be \u201creduced sunlight, which reacts with the natural chemicals in your body, like serotonin and melatonin, that determine mood and energy levels and regulate sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Lots of people get so-called winter blues. That\u2019s not SAD. People with seasonal affective disorder have much stronger symptoms that can make it hard to function \u201cat home, work and in social settings,\u201d per the Mayo Clinic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The condition is more common in the northern half of the U.S. because there\u2019s less sunlight than down south. The estimate is that perhaps as many as 1 in 10 people in the northern regions have SAD, which runs in families and it is more common in women. <\/p>\n<p>What is seasonal affective disorder?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Among the symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hard time concentrating.<\/li>\n<li>Feeling tired and fatigued, \u201cincluding feeling a loss of energy nearly every day\u201d of the less-daylight months.<\/li>\n<li>Feeling worthless.<\/li>\n<li>Losing interest in things you normally would enjoy.<\/li>\n<li>Feeling persistently sad or depressed.<\/li>\n<li>Sleep disturbance that can lead to too much or too little sleep.<\/li>\n<li>Weight gain or loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2025\/nov\/02\/how-to-beat-the-winter-blues-seasonal-affective-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2025\/nov\/02\/how-to-beat-the-winter-blues-seasonal-affective-disorder\">The Guardian<\/a> adds that people with SAD also may want to eat more, especially carbohydrates. And Cathy Wyze, a chancellor\u2019s research fellow at the University of Edinburgh, told The Guardian that the biggest advance over the past decade \u201chas been the realization that seasonal changes in human mood are probably endogenous \u2014 that they\u2019re part of our physiology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Per The Guardian, \u201cWyse and her colleagues recently analyzed four years of UK Biobank sleep data from half a million people. \u2018We found that in winter, people tended to sleep longer and had increased sleeplessness \u2014 their sleep wasn\u2019t so good as in the summer,\u2019 said Wyse, who will present these findings at the British Sleep Society conference in Brighton next week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The impact of reduced sunlight is believed to be even greater on people with bipolar disorder than on those who do not have that disorder.<\/p>\n<p>How is SAD treated?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Among the treatments for SAD that Mayo recommends are getting a prescription for and directions on how to use light therapy, antidepressant medication, at least 20 minutes a day of exercise and\/or cognitive behavioral therapy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mayo says you can also take preventive measures before symptoms begin, including increasing physical activity, spending time outside when the sun is out, keeping your environment bright, making sleep a priority, socializing \u2014 get out and about \u2014 with friends and family, eat well, avoid drugs and alcohol that make depression worse. You can manage stress with techniques like deep breathing, mindfulness and meditation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Guardian adds grabbing morning sunlight, a regular sleep schedule, avoiding screens late at night, grabbing an hour outdoors in daylight even on cloudy days, reframing \u201cI hate winter\u201d to \u201cI can plan around winter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The most important might be The Guardian\u2019s last bit of advice: \u201cKnow when to seek help.\u201d If mood, sleep or motivation lag for weeks or interfere with normal life, see a professional, because SAD can be treated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"SAD symptoms include fatigue, loss of interest and sleep disturbances.
