One group stayed inactive, while the other did the following routine:

First six weeks: 30-60 minutes of continuous moderate-intensity cycling three times a week

Second six weeks: 60 minutes of cycling with six 6-minute interval-style bursts (interspersed with three minutes of active recovery) at a higher intensity three times a week

During the study, the researchers tracked participants’ inhibitory control with something called a “flanker test,” which is a psychological test that evaluates your ability to ignore unnecessary information and hone in on relevant info.

The researchers discovered that people in the workout group had a gradual increase in that inhibitory control, while those in the control group saw a drop in the overall accuracy of their testing responses. The decline could be because the task was cognitively challenging. “The task is quite demanding and can become tiring or demotivating when repeated,” says Tomasz Ligęza, PhD, study co-author, psychologist, and researcher at the Institute of Psychology at Jagiellonian University. “Exercise may have helped the training group maintain engagement and focus, preventing this decline.”

Ultimately, the researchers note: “These findings highlight the potential of exercise programs as an accessible and effective strategy for improving cognitive health, especially in healthy but sedentary adults.”

Why might this exercise routine help people focus more?

Ligęza points out that other research suggests that regular aerobic exercise supports brain health. “Over time, exercise increases cardiovascular fitness, which improves blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain,” he explains. This also stimulates the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports the growth and maintenance of brain cells, Ligęza says.

“When BDNF goes up, you activate receptors in parts of the brain involved in memory formation, decision-making, and your state of wellbeing,” says Jeffrey Edwards, PhD, director of Neuroscience at Brigham Young University who was not involved with the study. As a result, you can end up being better at decision-making, and feel better overall when you work out, he says.

There’s even more to consider, though. “Psychologically, sticking with an exercise routine can also boost confidence and our sense of control—we learn that we can overcome discomfort, stay consistent, and reach goals,” Ligęza says. “These biological and psychological changes together may help people stay more focused in everyday life.”

Beyond that, Ligęza says that physical activity creates a “reset” for your mind. “During exercise, we typically step away from rumination and repetitive thoughts,” he says. “This mental break can help us return to decisions with more clarity and perspective.”

More On Cognitive HealthHow To Put This Research To Work

Ligęza stresses that his research was done in a controlled lab setting, so it’s hard to say for sure how the findings will apply to impulse control and focus in the real world.

Still, he says that movement can definitely help—especially when you can get your heart rate up. “We observed greater benefits when cardiorespiratory fitness improved, suggesting that gently progressing intensity over time may be helpful,” he says.

If you don’t work out a lot right now, Edwards suggests starting with moderate-intensity activities you enjoy, like walking or biking, and adding more challenging intervals with time. “You could take something like walking and then do more high-intensity walking or running intervals,” he says.

But Ligęza stresses the importance of making exercise fun and sustainable. “Do it outdoors, exercise with others, or treat it as time for yourself rather than a chore,” he says.

Korin Miller is a freelance writer specializing in general wellness, sexual health and relationships, and lifestyle trends, with work appearing in Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Self, Glamour, and more.
